Early radish sprouts and brisk Pete day notes

Bill Wilson reported radish seeds sprouted before the norther, with some seedlings half an inch tall, while he hunted English pea seed for a planned early crop. Mrs. Tray Lipscomb’s yard showed pretty yellow blooms despite the cold, and County Superintendent Millard Brent learned postal workers were off for George Washington's birthday. Sam Zumwalt waved as honking traffic followed him and he drove on.

Supreme Court declines tax stay on Texas poll tax ruling

UPI reports Justice Hugo L Black refused to stay the Feb 9 ruling by a three judge federal court in Austin that Texas poll tax is unconstitutional. The stay request was filed by the Travis County Republican Executive Committee seeking to suspend the ruling pending appeal to the Supreme Court. The court is weighing Virginia and other states challenges under the 1965 voting rights act to state poll taxes for federal election eligibility.

Viet Cong clash with Marines in Double Eagle operation

UPI reports two Viet Cong units tried to stand and fight U S Marines along the South China Sea coast in Operation Double Eagle. Marines counted about 46 Viet Cong killed before the attackers broke off. Near Bung Son south of Saigon, the 1st US Cavalry Division clashed with guerrillas, with ground fire collapse injuring helicopters. Other actions included Jet Infantry Division in Mastiff and the Ist An Cavalry in Wintering Masher area, all near Saigon, with significant jungle fighting and equipment losses.
