County Agent Wayne Cranfill quips about the weather. Paul Brown seeks pecan culture information before lunch. Jackie Caldwell discusses age without figures. Cub Scouts of Pack 260 attend Blue and Gold banquet and play outside before dinner.
Judge A M Harrison called the January term grand jury for March 1. Sheriff’s department sends notices to panel members. County attorney Pat Beene expects few cases now but cannot predict developments before the meeting. Jury likely to complete work in one day.
President Johnson urged Congress to pass a 10 year plan for 6 million housing units plus rent supplements and model cities. He proposed 2.18 billion for anti poverty efforts and asked for a 10 percent income tax increase.
Black power leader H. Rap Brown, jailed after allegedly threatening FBI agent William Smith Jr. and family, vows to starve or die rather than pay a $100,000 bond. The incident followed testimony at a bond hearing and Brown’s prior travel restriction order.
Bonham residents may nominate the outstanding man and woman of the year for 1967. Nominations go to the Chamber of Commerce awards committee, with March 10 deadline. The winner receives a plaque at the March 28 chamber banquet. Bryce McIntyre urges participation.
A new Highway 82 association formed in Wichita Falls aims to push a four lane high speed highway across North Texas. About 60 people attended the meeting including Bryce McIntyre and local officials. The group will seek Texas Highway Department aid and set membership fees while a delegation is prepared for Austin. The U S 82 corridor runs from near Wichita Falls to Texarkana and beyond to Savannah Georgia.
UPI reports that weather worsened the grounding of the U.S. destroyer Bache near Rhodes. The Navy said refloating is not possible and dismantling will occur where she remains grounded instead of moving to a drydock.
U S Marines captured the southeastern corner of Hue’s Imperial City and raised the American flag signaling a nearing end for Viet Cong defenders. The assault, aided by napalm and bombs, left heavy casualties on both sides with U S forces reporting 543 Americans killed last week and about 18 239 total since entering Vietnam. The fight extended to the Perfume River area as Marines moved toward the Citadel and Nguyen Hoang Bridge while Viet Cong flags persisted in the interior redoubt.
A petit jury panel is summoned for Monday to hear civil and criminal cases in Sixth District Court. Three civil cases and one criminal case are set for trial, including the burglary indictment of Melvin Parker.
A hot water heater caused a fire alarm Thursday morning at a Negro horde on East Second Street. Firemen were called to the scene where the heater burned a hole in the flour.
The U S Weather Bureau warns travelers in Bonham to expect sleet tonight followed by snow through Friday morning. Temperatures dip to the 20s with highs in the mid-30s Friday. slick spots and frozen water reported on Thursday morning. motorists urged to drive cautiously on all highways and streets.
A Delta DC8 carrying 109 passengers was hijacked from Tampa by a man in cowboy attire who forced the jet to land in Havana after threatening a stewardess. He claimed he faced the electric chair and vanished after being escorted off by Cuban soldiers.
Charles Hill a local insurance man has filed for Place 4 on the Bunham independent school district board. Incumbent Clyde Crittenden currently holds Place 4 and fellow members Dr L C Biggers and Joe Denton Jr secretary have announced re election bids for the April 6 balloting.
