Henry Joe Fletcher notes many low numbered 1963 license tags remain uncollected and asks residents to bring 1962 registration papers to finish preparing other tags. He urges affected individuals to visit and complete reservations.
George Richard Avary age 60, a retired railroad worker and Bonham resident since 195, died Tuesday night February 19 1963 after a heart attack during a visit at friends home. Funeral services are planned Thursday with Mrs Avary and relatives in attendance.
Bonham voters head to the polls April 2 as Alderman at Large candidate J C Magouirk files for reelection. Magouirk, hotel operator and former business owner, is a Bonham native and Lions Club member. Gene Danner is the other filers for the at large seat, with petitions anticipated for other expiring posts. Funeral notices follow for Avary, longtime railroad employee and Bonham public figure, detailing his service in Hermleigh Snyder and Bonham and listing survivors and pallbearers.
The hijacked Venezuelan freighter Anzoategui surrendered to Brazilian marines at Santa on the Amazon River near Macapa. Lt. Medeiros Araujo led the operation with four armed marines as Orlando Sahoya represented Brazil. The ship was towed to safety while authorities plan custody and next steps in the piracy case.
Bonham area braces for a cold Canadian air mass forecast to hit late today or Thursday with temperatures dipping near 14 degrees in parts of the Panhandle. Strong winds, cloud cover, and possible flurries accompany the cold spell as officials warn of a sharp drop from 27 to near freezing by Thursday morning. North Central Texas expected to stay partly cloudy and cooler with a later warming trend. Washington report notes Venezuelan President Betancourt warnings of Communist-led threats and potential upheaval in Latin America.
Former Venezuelan President Betancourt advocates U S military action to topple Fidel Castro and end Cuba's Communist regime. He warns Soviets have built bases in the Americas and urges strong hemispheric defense against Soviet influence, calling for decisive long term action.
CYF of First Christian church hosts annual hamburger supper Thursday from 5 to 8 PM to fund foreign missions and assist two needy families during Christmas and Youth Week. Ravenna Community Improvement Club invites a Friday chili and stew supper at 5 PM in the Community Center to fund center improvements and club activities with homemade pies available. Two men, Reid Spivy Jr and Carl Hanes both incumbents, filed for Bonham Independent School District trustees for the annual election set Saturday April 6. John Meade, secretary of the board, reports places on the ballot and March 5 is the filing deadline.
An American backed South Vietnamese army attack near Xom Dinh village 140 miles south of Saigon routed a Viet Cong battalion. At least 50 Viet Cong were killed after observers spotted them earlier in the day.
A Navy patrol boat found a floating lifejacket and debris off Miami as possible early evidence linked to the tanker Marine Sulphur Queen which disappeared February 3 with 38 men aboard.
Representative Adam Clayton Powell rejects charges of misconduct and asserts defenses against criticisms from Senator Williams and some House colleagues. Atty Gen Kennedy and Representative Roosevelt offered support as Powell outlines his stance on funds for education and labor, the Harlem juvenile project, and his Puerto Rico trip funding.
Henry Joe Fletcher, tax assessor, says four communities Bonham area Honey Grove Ladonta Leonard and Trenton will host tag registration next week for 1943 license tags. He will visit Honey Grove Voyer building February 25 26 9 am to 4 pm and Ladonta City Hall February 27 Leonard February 28 Trenton Tribune office March 1 half day. Motorists should bring registration papers and vehicle information for 1963 registration.
Fannin county officers Wednesday investigated two thefts. Cawthorn reported a cow stolen from his barn east of Bonham and Dr L Biggs reported seven sacks of range booster cubes stolen from his barn north of Bonham.
The Rotary Club heard a two part CBS Reports feature about school integration problems presented in two 30 minute segments. The film, a copy now at the Sam Kayburo Library, was shown Wednesday with Rotarian Homer Jones introducing. Gary Hall and Delton Price, sons of local families, attended.
The Texas House advanced a Padre Island seashore measure after hours of floor action and amendments. Rep Ment Murray led the push amid debates on consolidating State Parks and Game and Fish operations and approval of a 5 million dollar sand seabed project.
