Representative Menton Murray of Harlingen asked for swift approval in the House to move Padre Island from state to federal control, advancing the final step in the integration with federal authority.

J C Roberts reports 5608 inmates were received in Texas state penitentiary in 1962. Occupations include one dentist one lawyer and one shoemaker among inmates. Harris County led with 893 admissions, Dallas 747. 226 women admitted. ages 17 to 25 accounted for 40 percent. 49 percent married 16 percent divorced 34 percent single.
Capt Marvin Blount of the Motor Vehicle Inspection Service notes that in Fannin County only 30 percent of 12,500 vehicles have been inspected and carry the 1963 sticker. April 15 is the deadline for inspection and fines may be levied for driving without a valid sticker.
The grand jury for the January term of 6th District Court will reconvene at 9 am Tuesday for its second meeting. The panel, led by foreman George Carlock of Honey Grove, had returned 12 indictments after an initial one-day session in late January and recessed until Feb 19 to issue subpoenas for out of county witnesses.
Firefighters reported a blaze damaged a small hay barn and its contents on Oscar Mitchell’s farm on Silo Road Sunday. A tractor was burning upon arrival and rafters were damaged with hay also affected.
Budget Director Kermit Gordon is set to wind up the administration’s arguments before the House Ways & Means Committee on Kennedy’s proposed tax cut. The committee resumes hearings after a one week lapse with Gordon as the final government witness. Tax Foundation Inc criticizes the plan urging tax system overhaul and spending cuts to avoid deficits and boost long term modernization.
Miss Mary Huffer of Honey Grove suffered critical injuries in a three car collision on US 82 west of Sherman. The Southwestern Bell employee was taken to Parkland Hospital Dallas for surgery with a fractured jaw and other injuries after being thrown through the windshield. Gene Roberts of Gainesville was driving the car and was trapped in his vehicle, hospitalized in Gainesville.

Theft of two tires and wheels was reported to the sheriff's department by Duke Mossey of Ivanhoe Rt. 1. Mossey told Deputy Sheriff Harvey Trapp the wheels and tires were taken from his car over the weekend.
Thousands of hikers from Nevada Utah and Pennsylvania faced long walks during a weekend trek. Gov Grant Sawyer and Lucy Redd joined a 25 mile stretch in Nevada while Al Schacht led a three day 50 mile march in New York. A fatality occurred as a car struck a marcher near Casper Wyoming.
A former Bonham resident, identified as Grady Koo, had his home wrecked by an explosion near Ib te Kos. Theresa Wilms and another man reported living nearby. The individual had worked at Jones Fred during World War III and later at Feren AFB and is described as the brother of Mrs Robert Rattan of Bookham.
A hijacker aboard the Venezuelan freighter Anzoategui offered to surrender to Brazilian authorities anchored off Brazil’s north coast. Brazilian destroyers moved in as the ship lay at a quiet Bra zils north coast anchorage in the Caribbean theater.
