The Texas Senate unanimously agrees to advance a bill by Sen. Bruce Reagan to permit the federal government to take 88 miles of Padre Island shore into a national seashore. The measure then passes 26 to 1, aiming to boost tourism and preservation.
The Senate backed a measure to create Padre Island national seashore on privately owned tracts with mineral rights reserved on state lands. Only Sen. Ratliff opposed the measure. Two amendments adjusted boundaries and Willacy County water district interests. A bid to strip Land Commissioner Sadler of veto power failed 16 11. The bill allows the board to rescind by unanimous vote.
