Readers recall hoarhound beans once used as a cough remedy. The candy, sugar dipped and sold by the barrel or in small boxes, remains a curiosity for younger folks while older residents remember its medicinal use and strong flavor. A steady demand persists at McKnight Drug with customers requesting the traditional treat.
A Fannin County commissioner says he needed assistance to free his vehicle from a muddy side road in his precinct recently. He avoided naming the exact location to spare embarrassment, noting the road is seldom used.
Bonham independent school district approves resolution accepting all provisions of the 1964 Civil Rights Bill. Supt. M. B. Nelson notes such resolutions are required for schools receiving any federal funds.
Bonham civic clubs and the district nurses association join for a Wednesday noon program at Fellowship Hall First Methodist. Dr Hugh Edward Wilson III of Dallas will discuss heart surgery progress and the Heart Association role in funding research. Heart Sunday drive is planned for Feb 2 with volunteers invited to help door to door.
Four defendants pleaded guilty before Judge A. M. Harrison in 6th District Court. L. L. McCall admitted to four forgery and passing indictments, with two to seven years per case to run concurrently. L. C. Coleman received two to three years for two forgery and passing counts. Frank Hansley and Arthur Gene Brooks got two year probated terms for burglary. A petit jury for Feb. 15 was ordered to handle a list of cases set for that week.
Laotian planes strafed and bombarded a mountain stronghold of about 600 rebels and policemen on a plateau overlooking Vientiane. Premier Souvanna Phouma moved to crush the last rebel remnants as rightwing leader Phoumi Nosavan fled into exile. Phoumi, removed as vice premier in the coalition government, and National Police Chief Ship crossed into Thailand.
In Washington the White House advised the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to consult with acting Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach and other top Justice Department officials about voting rights legislation. King, freed from jail in Selma after five days, had urged meeting with President Johnson to seek federal action, possibly a constitutional amendment, on Alabama voter laws.
Gov. Connally reappointed Durwood Manford of Smiley to the State Board of Insurance. A lawyer and former state representative, Manford was first named to the board in 1961 by Gov. Price Daniel and is named to a full six-year term.
Atlanta UPI report says Lester Maddox, longtime segregationist, agreed to admit Black patrons to his restaurant after a federal judge found him in contempt for defying court orders. Maddox told supporters he had no choice but to comply while signaling continued opposition to civil rights legislation. About 100 white patrons ate inside initially with no Black customers attempting entry.
Bonham residents and General Cable employees donated to a Robnett family relief fund after a Dallas area car crash killed Mr and Mrs Charles Robnett and their 5 year old son Ricky leaving 12 year old Anita Kay hospitalized. By Saturday the fund reached 254.75 with gifts from locals and Daily Favorite coverage guiding donations via Gene Danner at General Cable.
U S presidential assistant McGeorge Bundy said Washington has a deep commitment to the anti Communist fight in South Viet Nam during a Saigon visit. He spoke amid large Buddhist demonstrations in Hue and a National Buddhist Center rally in Saigon after talks with military leaders and religious representatives. Kosygin arrived in North Vietnam for talks with Ho Chi Minh as Bundy refused to compare their missions. Bundy noted Buddhists Catholics Hoa Ha and Cao Dai leaders voiced appreciation for U S efforts.
Fog and drizzle covered Central East and South Texas with light rainfall. Noon temperatures ranged 61 in Houston and Beaumont to 49 in Lubbock, with a warming trend expected through Sunday. Overnight lows varied from 28 at Dalhart to 55 at Corpus Christi.
Rep. Will L. Smith of Beaumont proposed a constitutional amendment to abolish one house of the Texas Legislature and form a single chamber with 100 members representing 95,000 Texans each. He argued a unicameral body would be quicker cheaper and more responsive, costing about 40 percent less than the current system.
A Chilean DC6B airliner with 87 aboard crashed into snow covered slopes of a volcano in the Andes near Santiago. All aboard died including American tourist Helen A. Berger, 67, of Long Island, N. Y. The disaster, worse in Chilean history, followed bad weather after takeoff from Los Cerrillos Airport en route to Buenos Aires.
Soviet Premier Kosygin and a high level Moscow delegation arrived in Hanoi for talks seen as a move to persuade North Vietnam to tilt away from China. Ho Chi Minh greeted Kosygin warmly as tens of thousands lined streets. Tass called the meeting warm and friendly, while Hanoi radio noted strong public support. The visit coincides with Moscow signaling a new deal to limit China’s influence and offer air defense and economic aid.
Eight Americans were killed and 61 wounded when Viet Cong guerrillas attacked the U S compound in Pleiku, headquarter of the Vietnamese Second Army Corps, northeast of Saigon. The morning assault was the first major offensive after a week-long lunar new year cease fire.
President Johnson named Kenneth E. Belleu a World War II infantry hero to be undersecretary of the Navy, succeeding Paul B. Fay. Belleu has served as assistant secretary for installations and logistics since February 1961, with Graeme C. Bannerman nominated to replace Belleu as assistant secretary.
Two people were injured in three accidents on Fannin County roads Friday and Saturday reports the highway patrol. The latest incident, about 4 45 p m Saturday on Farne Road 271 near Cotton Center, involved a car driven by D F Mabry of Ladonia that overturned after leaving the road. Mabry was uninjured. Earlier, about 9 55 a m Saturday, Delbert Sessom of Honey Grove received a head injury when his car, trying to pass another driven by his son Raymond Foster, crashed into the rear of the son’s car. A passenger in the elder Mabry’s car was hospitalized, and another injury case involved a head wound from a collision on State Highway 11 near Ladonia.
