Eight Felicitas were killed and twenty-five captured in a fight at Rodriguez Monday night. A train load of troops has been sent directly to Rodriguez amid fears of further trouble.
United States consumption of bleached cotton fibre for explosives in the three months to December 31 reached 81,007,539 pounds including linters and hull fibre. For the year 583,610 bales were used, more than double the prior year.
The Bolivian minister at Rio de Janeiro says Bolivia will support the United States against Germany. Chile reportedly will not back the U S position. In the Evestone sinking report Consul Frost notes no warning, no resistance, and no aid to survivors.
British steamer Saxon Briton, 1300 tons, was sunk with two killed. Twelve survivors were landed by the British steamer Agul amid reports from Lon don dated February 7. In Waukegan Illinois on February 7 a dangerous high voltage death wire was stretched around the Great Lakes as a wireless station guard doubled his post to manage the peril.
Washington reports from February seven indicate Gerard traveled to Berne Switzerland and would depart Berlin soon. Earlier, Germany delayed his transport then Bernstorff was informed and another note said no obstacle existed to his leaving.
Senator Stone urged the Senate to endorse President Wilson's severance of relations with Germany, citing constitutional rights and arguing for unity. Senator Lodge defended the move as honoring safety and future security, urging a united front to the public and the world.
