Friday marks Ground Hog Day when the furry forecaster is dug up to predict six more weeks of winter or an early spring. Some believers defend the tradition while others joke it off as superstition from older days.
J. J. Coonrod credits the red bird cardinal with predicting an early spring. He notes the cardinal’s spring whistle has been heard lately, contrasting with a winter whistle. He qualifies that unseasonably warm temperatures may have fooled the birds and people alike.

Burglars were frightened off Wednesday night before loading loot stacked inside the Honey Grove T C Merrell garage. Deputy Collingsworth and Honey Grove Police Chief Ivey investigated after finding 19 tires and 10 starters and generators at the back door, with the back entrance unlocked. Merrell reported missing items from another Honey Grove garage last week included four tires and four batteries.

George J. Atkins 77 of 711 East 9th Street died in a Bonham hospital on Wednesday January 31 1968. He served as Bonham postmaster 11 years and earlier was principal of Bonham High School. Funeral at 2 pm Friday at Wise Funeral Home chapel with Rev Mac Hargrove officiating. Interment Willow Wilg cemetery. He was a World War I veteran and Baylor University graduate. He fished with Johnny Kincaid in Bonham area. Survivors include several Bonham area cousins and others in Plano Dallas and Houston. He served as postmaster from May 1 1941 to May 31 1925 in Bonham.
Louis Rothberg of Dallas, who operated a sewing center here last fall, was arrested on a complaint alleging defrauding by worthless checks. He was taken to Bunham by Fannin county deputies after Dallas officers initiated the case with Sheriff Dudley Jackson noting holds by other counties.
The Philippines Volcanology Commission reports Taal volcanic activity intensified with red hot rocks and ash columns rising about 3,000 feet. The island Volcano has prompted evacuations 40 miles south of Manila since Wednesday.

Butch Ray confirmed mid December by President Lyndon Johnson as permanent postmaster at Ector and displays the certificate in the post office lobby. Ray began as a substitute clerk and assistant to his brother Shube Ray in 1943, and was made acting postmaster after Shube retired last March 1. Congressman Ray Roberts backed the nomination. Tom Keener now serves as substitute clerk.

The United States fields 1054 land based ICBMs and 656 submarine missiles, and 697 long range bombers versus 155 Soviet bombers, while Washington maintains a large overall strategic advantage. He says the real measure is capability to inflict unacceptable damage, not sheer numbers.
Bonham residents are invited Sunday afternoon to join the 1968 Mothers March sponsored by the Women's Auxiliary of the James Bragg post VFW in support of the March of Dimes. Auxiliary captains and church youth groups will coordinate door to door canvassing at VEW Hall and reports will be filed back at the hall. Proceeds fund the National Foundation for birth defect research and medical care with shares distributed to local and national programs.
Bonham residents observed the sun on Wednesday and Thursday as a cool front moved in. Clearing is expected tonight with a slight temperature drop and Friday forecast for mostly fair and cooler conditions. Thursday morning low was in the upper 50s after a 68 degree high on Wednesday.
