National Road Deaths Hit 356
United Press International reports 356 traffic deaths over the holiday period, with 356 in traffic, 30 fires, 5 plane crashes totaling 391. States reporting fatalities include Texas and California with 31 each, Georgia 20, Florida and Missouri 18. In Georgia a triple fatality on Interstate 95 led to vehicular homicide charges against the truck driver. Mary Brooks of Savannah and her two sons Charles and Andrew died in the crash. Fire destroys Leonard Farm Store and station
Fire at the Leonard Farm Store and adjacent service station started in the back ceiling and burned from about 6 30 p m Sunday until 11 p m. Fire rekindled after overnight alarms leading to a second dispatch at about 7 a m Monday. Owner A W Pee Wee Felmet estimated the building 90 percent destroyed with tires and a Tanden dump truck damaged. Firemen from Leonard fought the blaze with no gasoline pumps catching fire. City Marshal Jan MclIntyre reported the incident.

Chaplin Buried In Private Swiss Ceremony
Under misty sleet in Corsier Switzerland Charlie Chaplin was laid to rest in a private funeral attended by his wife Oona Chaplin and seven of their eight children. A brief service at Manoir du Ban preceded the burial at 1045 a.m. Local Rev Hichard Thomas led the address and the coffin was lowered into a simple grave as a crowd of about 300 gathered.
