Ousted Dahomey president Christophe Soglo arrived in Paris denying he fled to seek aid to regain power. He said his Paris trip was a government mission connected to the overthrow last weekend by the current regime.
President Johnson returns to Washington after a 27 000 mile world tour spanning Hawaii American Samoa Thailand and Italy. He met Pope Paul VI in Rome and planned to fly home via Madrid ending a historic journey as the first sitting US president to circumnavigate the globe. The Pope urged a peace stance during Christmas broadcasts as protests erupted in Rome.
Mrs Joyce Burns Amlin 20 died from injuries in a Garland auto accident Friday night. Her husband Larry Amlin is critically injured and hospitalized in Dallas Parkland. Funeral plans are incomplete. Survivors include her husband a daughter and numerous Burns siblings.
A church photo features Kelly Taylor in the First Baptist church chapel with a manger scene and stained glass. The beginner in the church’s beginners department learns that Christmas centers on the birth of Christ, with Santa Claus celebrated second. Kelly is the daughter of Neal and [Mrs.] Taylor of Route 2 Bonham.
Bonham churches schedule brief Sunday worships and a musical emphasis for Christmas Eve. First Christian presents the Peterson Christmas Cantata Love Transcending with organist Mrs. W B Keeman. Presbyterian holds a short Christmas meditation and baptism for Bradley David. First Baptist plans morning worship with carols and a live Nativity at 6 pm. Holy Trinity, Saint Elizabeth, First Methodist, Trinity Baptist and others offer prayers, cantatas, and solo performances.
The Bonham Chamber of Commerce announced winners for its home Christmas lighting contest. First place in the adult division went to Rev. Ray Shoulders at 121 Carpenter Loop, while Debby Herndon won the student division at 115 Carpenter Loop. Second and third in the adult division went to Mrs. Don Lee and Roosevelt Vance, with further honorable mentions to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Boone and Billy Circles. In the student division, Kathy Baugh and Scott McDonald placed, as judges praised all 16 homes entered. The lights will stay on through the holidays for viewing.
The Daily Favorite will not publish on Monday as staff take the Christmas holiday. Publication resumes Tuesday with usual delivery. New Year’s Day edition will print early. Management and staff extend Christmas wishes to readers.
American troops, buoyed by Johnson’s claim the Communists cannot win, fortified positions and decorated bunkers as the 24 hour cease-fire began at 6 p.m. Sunday. Viet Cong announced a 72 hour truce starting after midnight. Paratroopers of the 1st Airborne Division fought near Saigon, killing 14 Viet Cong. at Phu Kuong a government outpost faced heavy Viet Cong casualties before retreating under air and artillery fire.
Bonham residents can expect a calm Christmas weekend with churches offering special services Sunday and local businesses and many government offices closed Sunday through Tuesday. Peace officers fire squads and highway patrol will be on duty to curb accidents as Texas DPS expects 55 highway deaths over the period during Operation Deathwatch from Friday evening to Monday night.
Pope Paul VI called on men of good will to work for peace in a Christmas broadcast from the Vatican. He urged giving up skepticism and feverish activity, and pressed for a Day of Peace on Jan. 1 while avoiding direct references to Vietnam and bombing campaigns.
