Allied troops cross Vesle establish two bridgeheads near Fismes
Paris reports Allied forces reach the Vesle River with two strong bridgeheads at Basoches and Jorchery while German losses near Fismes are described as severe. Allied material includes about 1.5 million 77 mm shells. Since July 15, eighty-seven German divisions, totaling about 1,044,000 men, have been engaged, including forty-seven in the Marne pocket.

Fire destroys Cedar Street residence of Senator Gibson
Yesterday at 10 o clock the Cedar street home of Senator Gibson and much of its contents were burned. Basel Gibson and a friend were staying there. a cook was preparing breakfast when the roof fire erupted, likely from a faulty flue. Firemen arrived quickly but the house was consumed, first floor goods saved while second floor contents burned. Loss unsettled but reportedly insured. The fire department thanks John A. Agnew for a liberal morning check.

London reports unofficial German casualties since July 15 total between 300000 and 350000, with about 40000 captured. Allied losses are described as certainly much less.

Washington Aug 5 American casualties from the great offensive begin to pour in. Names of 407 announced today with 209 more expected this afternoon. Of those, 203 killed in action, 37 died of wounds, 9 of disease, 1 airplane accident, 6 from other causes. Marine casualties total 10 with 9 killed in action and 1 died of wounds. The Second Annual Fannin County Baptist Encampment at Ivanoe August 10 to 25 postponed until further notice.
