Books fixed to shield Governor Ferguson say brewery official

Henning Bruhn, president of Lone Star Brewing Association, testified in a federal trial that brewery books were altered to protect Governor Ferguson. He said omissions kept the $150,000 loan to Ferguson in 1917 secret, not to mislead the internal revenue service.

Swiss to lead American German prisoners conference

United Press reports Switzerland has accepted to host the American German prisoner conference in Berne this month. The Swiss president will open the session and name a Swiss official as presiding officer. The American delegation will include military and civilian representatives to review issues vital to prisoner welfare. Rev. B. F. Milam visited Nobility today.

Pershing Reports Large Casualty List Highlighting Holtsville Losses

Pershing releases a casualty list totaling 238 with forty-two killed in action and 126 severely wounded. The record notes heavy losses from Holtsville Pennsylvania and lists deaths from wounds disease accidents and other causes.

Paris Aug 2 Allied progress along a fifteen mile front between Fere-en-Tardenois and Ville-en-Tardenois is reported. Extent of advance not learned on cable. Fires observed between the Ardre and the Vesle rivers indicate German destruction of materiel at several points including Fismes.

Ridge Capture by Allies Shifts German Retreat Front

London reports that the Allies advanced three miles on a five mile front and seized the ridge north of the Crise river between the Ourcq and the Aisne. The victory endangers a retreat in the center and threatens the German west flank.

British Front Advances Reported in Picardy and Flanders

Haig reports successful raid operations and hostile artillery actions on Picardy and Flanders fronts. Prisoners were taken in raids north of Albert and near Festubert. Chas. Harris of Lamasco was here en route to Denison.

Paris dispatch says Allied progress during the night on the Soissons Rheims line. North of the Marne French forces moved forward and Americans extended their right wing to Bomplery. Cirges and the Meu Nières wood held. heavy fighting continues beyond Cierges with Americans gaining key heights.

French General Mangin’s army pushes forward with slow, steady gains along a ten mile front. Allied artillery batteries were positioned by eight in the morning after an early morning assault, signaling a rapid German retreat at several points.

Funeral held for longtime Texas veteran Alex Smith

Alex Smith died at 3:30 A.M. at his daughter Mrs. A Nicol’s home in South Bonham after a short illness. Rev. McKinney conducted last night’s funeral at the residence. The Masonic lodge escorted the body to Randolph and it was shipped to Mt. Pleasant to be buried beside his wife. Born March 12, 1828 in North Carolina, he was ninety last month and served four years in the Confederate Army. He lived in Titus county, was a devout Methodist and a member of the Masonic order for seventy years. Survived by eleven children, with homes in Fort Worth, Wichita Falls, Cass county, and Cass county’s third daughter Mrs Nicol in South Bonham.
