Iwana Sherrer captured first place in the regional typing contests at Kilgore and will head to the state meet in Austin this weekend. Teammate Sheryl DeBerry took second place in the same events.
James Clark reported a brush fire Sunday night near the end of Pecan Street about a mile south of Boone's. The fire was described as a grass fire across the road, with confusion over the exact location and photo block obstruction described by Trang spears xeshed to the photo block.

A male caller warned of a bomb at L H Rather with 15 minutes to evacuate. police, sheriff deputies and fire crews searched the building. A cardboard box behind a boiler contained crumpled paper. authorities pledged vigorous prosecution and noted federal law applies.
The Postal Rate Commission schedules hearings beginning May 17 to review the U S Postal Service request for a 1.45 billion dollar annual rate increase.
A consumer group sues in U S District Court to delay the May 1 Amtrak takeover of most intercity service for at least 30 days. The suit names Michigan and Indiana, with Western states likely joining, as Amtrak plans to drop 109 of 285 trains and focus on major routes. Also, Denver & Rio Grande Western declines to join Amtrak, ending Cheyenne service and removing Salt Lake City and Grand Junction from the network.
The liquor by the drink question will not be on the May 18 ballot for Fannin county voters. County Judge Choice Moore and County Clerk Mrs. Wardenl Fletcher were advised by Secretary of State Martin Dies that the issue will not appear on ballots handed to voters. Fannin county did not approve repeal of the ban in last fall’s constitutional amendment election.
Voters in Fannin County will face four amendments. Amendment One would establish a State Ethics Commission to set ethics rules, investigate violations, and propose improvements in the legislative process. Amendment Two allows the legislature to propose constitutional amendments in call and regular sessions. Amendment Three lifts the cap on total state appropriations for certain needy programs and sets yearly limits for others. Amendment Four authorizes 100 million dollars in bonds to aid water quality and related programs with a bond interest cap. Polls open 7 am to 7 pm at precinct sites.

City officers identified the two drivers in a two car collision on East Sam Rayburn Monday afternoon. John Gerald Dawson of Paris and Harold Wayne Underwood of Bonham were named as the drivers, with both vehicles traveling east at the time of the crash.
The National Weather Service forecasts a slight chance of thundershowers in the Bonham area tonight with partly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures. Lows near 60 and highs in the upper 70s are expected Wednesday, as a cool front moves through North Texas.
A Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman at a Vancouver roadblock dodged a point blank shot from a robbery suspect and fatally shot the gunman with four rounds from his service revolver. The suspect lurched forward, drew a .357 magnum, and fired just six feet away before the officer returned fire.
