Old Boll Weevil Catcher Tied To Local Texas Farm History
Mrs. Ritchey of Bastrop County recalls a 1920s boll weevil catcher built by her father Joe Lindsey in Central Texas. The device used windmill blade shakers and a sled to jar weevils from blooms, catching them in a pan and burning the sacks later. The gadget, later donated to Texas Tech University Museum, connects to Lubbock’s Gene and Mewhinney family and Milam County’s Hiram Shaw who operated it on L. B. Mewhinney’s farms in 1922 1923 and possibly 1924.
