The White House said railroad negotiators have made some definite gains in efforts to avert a coast to coast strike that could begin Saturday. Mediators stress remaining issues are tough as Johnson’s team notes progress under a 15 day truce expiring 12:01 a.m. EST Saturday.
The county shows many abandoned houses along highways and dirt roads. Some are moved, burned, or decaying with left behind butane tanks and antennas. Officials warn against traveling on wet or vapored roads due to danger.
Eleven Fannin county communities start bids for a state finals berth in the community improvement contest. The Soviet Union will hand control of its Sam surface to air missiles in Cuba to Cuban forces on May 1 and withdraw about 3,000 troops, leaving an estimated 1,000 to 4,000 still in Cuba. Fidel Castro is expected to resist Soviet veto power and seek full missile control.
In Nicosia Cyprus the neutralization plan trims fortifications around the UN peace force area near the Ledra Palace and British HQ. UN spokesman notes armed force remains on the mile square zone while Turkish Cypriots resist constitutional changes. A.N. Secretary of State Dean Rusk, after a four day visit to South Viet Nam, said U.S. troops will remain until the northern aggression is defeated and peace is secured. Officials had expected withdrawal of most of 15,600 troops by 1965. He noted Laos coup rumors but did not address the power struggle there.
Surgeon General Luther Terry announced that cigarette smoking fell by more than 25 percent in the first weeks after the smoking and health report was issued. He cautioned that some quitters may have returned to smoking and urged programs aimed at youths to sustain the decline.

A United Air Lines Viscount jet carrying Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson from Washington to Cleveland was struck by lightning about half an hour from Cleveland. The bolt hit two seats behind her. she laughed after the danger and the plane landed safely at Cleveland Hopkins Airport about 1 pm after a slight delay. Pilot G A Mosteller praised the aircraft control and reported no damage.
Campaign chairman Martin Halsell of Fannin county says the Cancer Crusade on Tuesday aims to educate the public to prevent cancer with annual doctor visits and awareness of seven danger signals while raising funds for research education and patient services. He urges residents to welcome ACS volunteers and notes one in three cancer patients is now cured and timely medical care saves lives.
President Johnson told the Associated Press meeting in New York he orders a substantial four year reduction in enriched uranium for weapons. He said Khrushchev signaled a similar move and cited broader aims to ease tension while preserving alliances. Johnson also sent William Bundy to Laos and reaffirmed Cuba isolation and Vietnam efforts.
Cuban Premier Fidel Castro charged the United States with violations of Cuban air space and ordered faster antiaircraft preparations. He accused Marines at Guantanamo of provocations, said he would protest to the United Nations, and warned that Cuba will not bow to pressure.
