Two students from Bendie, Rayburn Hale and Janie Davis, won or placed in District 6-AAA at Commerce last Saturday but failed to appear on the official entries list. Hale and Davis earned the right to represent the district in the Fort Worth re contest after placing first and second in persuasive speaking.
Dallas judge rejects defense delay request and orders April 29 hearing on amended motion seeking 196 grounds to overturn Jack Ruby's conviction for the Oswald murder. If denied, Ruby's appeals move to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin to seek reversal.
Bonham city commissioners elected J M Crockett mayor and Billy Cox mayor pro tem. A new police car was purchased from Charles Carter Chevrolet Buick for 1049.50 plus a 1962 police car. The board approved certificates of appreciation for retiring members and employees and discussed land purchases for a park, street widening, and a water main project.
The Soviet Union condemned a rumor of Premier Nikita Khrushchev's death as false and lodged protests with West Germany's DPR agency. DPA apologized after retracting the story, while Japanese reporters denied involvement. Khrushchev continued official duties and met Polish Communist leaders.
In Nicosia Cyprus bursts of light machinegun fire hit the Turkish army camp on the Nicosia Kyrenia road as Greek and Turkish Cypriots fight for three hours. A Greek Cypriot man was killed and two others wounded. UN observers warn the crisis could worsen and Turkey vows to defend its troops under treaty rights.
Eight people were injured in an indoor test mishap at Cape Canaveral when the Delta rocket third stage apparently ignited. Six were sent to Patrick Air Force Base Hospital and two to Cape Canaveral Hospital, with two in surgery. The apparatus was being mated for a prelaunch test of an orbiting solar observatory planned for next Tuesday.
Fort Worth votes to appeal Civil Aeronautics Board findings that Dallas keeps Love Field and Fort Worth should not share a regional airport. City aims to have the full board review Jac Newman’s recommendation amid plans for a larger jet era.
Fair skies and warmer weather are forecast for the Bonham area through Wednesday. Expect a low near 50 Wednesday morning and a high around 77 Wednesday afternoon as north central Texas remains fair and slightly warmer.
Three Italian air force members were killed when two jets collided during a training flight from Practica di Mare near Fondi. Wreckage from the midair explosion also injured three farmers in an orange grove where they were working.
The Library Board extended the deadline for entering enlarged photographs to Wednesday at 5 30 p.m. Mrs Lewie Morgan notes mats were scarce so entries may use cardboard or secure backgrounds. Entries may be left at the Public Library Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and will be prepared for display. The show opens Thursday afternoon April 16 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
The Fannin County commissioners' court met briefly on Monday to canvass and declare valid the Apr 4 school trustee election returns. Bills were approved and ordered paid while proposed improvements were discussed at length with no action.
Greece formally protested to Turkey over the expulsion and harassment of Greek residents in Turkey linked to the Cyprus dispute. Athens warns of possible reprisals in Turkey and plans a broad information campaign while sending similar notes to other governments and the United Nations.
County Clerk Pete Holman reported 53 absentee ballots mailed nationwide. Two ballots were voted in person. Most ballots went to servicemen from Fannin county stationed elsewhere, who will be away on May 2.
Bonhi students swept the Commerce district event with Jo Ann Shaw earning a trophy for meet participation. Keren Gason led in shorthand, Doris Leslie top in slide rule, Shirley Harp honored as best actress, Alena Feirchild third in shorthand, and James Norwood first in elation.
