Texas political maneuvering spurs talk of Thompson Krom entering the race as Governor consideration rises. Ernest O announces decision to resign from the Texas Commission and seek Congress, while others like Marvin Jones and O'Daniel navigate Democratic primaries and district contests amid campaign shifts and party strategy.
Gov. W. Lee Daniel granted a 30 day stay of execution for Burton Franks, sentenced to death for the murder of Willis Wilemon, president of the Maynears State Bank, killed during a bank robbery. The stay delays the execution from May 7 to June 6.
Time will tell if the Allies and Norwegians can halt Hitler’s war machine as fighting stiffens in Norway. British strikes slow German forces while Narvik harbor actions and northern Norway pose the steepest challenge due to geography and sea routes.
Reports indicate renewed interest in a possible wildcat oil test north of Honey Grove. Years ago C M Joiner and son John tested the Joe Goss farm but abandoned it due to hard formations. Now activity resumes as Goss, Morgan and Ware discussed the project with the Joiners in Durant Oklahoma.
Myron Blalock Texas chairman for the Garner for President campaign urged Texas Democrats in a statewide radio broadcast to back their native son as part of a Liberal Roosevelt Garner administration. He said Garner, as Ways and Means chairman, framed the income tax approach and pushed farm tax adjustments, and directed delegates to the state convention in Waco.
In Austin on April 13 the class AA division of the University of Texas Interscholastic League voted 70 to 2 to uphold the new 18 year age limit for league football. R. J. Kidd, athletic director, announced the decision.
The Seventh Annual Spring Dairy Show will be held at Texas A and M College on Saturday April 20. Organized by the Kream and Kow Klub and the dairy department, the event features judging contests for cash prizes with Joe W Bradley as judge. Free admission and open house all day. Probation enforcement cost the United States almost $1,000,000 morily.
After dipping to 31 degrees Friday night, temps rose to 41 by 8 a.m. Saturday and a 47 degree high Friday preceded frost. Damage to gardens and crops was not as severe as feared but is under review by County Agent V. J. Young who said a definite check will take days to assess fruit trees and truck crops from Thursday and Friday sub-freezing weather.
The Lions and Rotary Clubs of Bonham present It Can Happen to You a safety film in theatres from April 15 to 20. The Texas Safety Council headed by Pierce Brooks will supply it without charge. The film follows a youth who repeatedly ignores safety rules, leading to a fatal crash involving his baby sister. It aims to teach safe driving to boys aged 15 to 20.
Washington April 13 The army announced release of a fifth type of American aircraft a basic Douglas attack bomber for sale to the Allied powers. Contracts are in progress valued around one billion dollars with final release arrangements completed at the War Department by Douglas representatives and Army officials.
Wildcat drilling starts about 10 miles north of Bonham as A B Powell and associates spud Maude Barker No 1 in Fannin county. County officials authorize WPA sewing room funding and approve increasing local allotments while weighing road closures and district votes.
Norwegians clash with Germans in southern Norway as large scale naval operations unfold at the Baltic entrance. Allies lay a vast minefield around the German North Sea coast, Denmark, Skagerrak and Kattegat to trap German forces with a submarine fleet poised in the Kattegat. Berlin’s DNB reports German big guns landed at Trondheim after bombardment by German planes, while Allied mining and naval moves escalate on the Western Front and northern coast.
The marriage of actor George Jessell to actress Lois Andrews was held in Detroit today with United States minister R. Chimweil presiding. The couple wed after a brief ceremony witnessed by friends and colleagues in the stage and screen community.
Bonham High debaters won the district contest defeating Sulphur Springs Pearsall and others. Albert Broadfoot and Dearing led the team toward the regional meet in Longview on April 20 with finals in Austin possible if victorious. Girls represented Panrin County by Honey Grove.
