The Purple Warriors open their district 5-AA basketball schedule at Denison Friday night. Bonham is short handed with Hawkins missing and McMillan nursing a bad arm. If Hawkins and McMillan play, the starting five will be strong. substitutions may weaken the team. Friday also features Greenville at Sherman and Gainesville at Paris. Sherman favored over Greenville. Paris slight edge over Gainesville. Bonham opens at home Monday vs Sherman due to exams.
J Tom Rogers son of Mr and Mrs Ray Rogers Route 2 Bonham Texas has completed an orientation course at an air service command station in England. The program bridged training in the States and combat soldiering in Germany with lectures by veterans on chemical warfare defense and health in combat. He will move to a station from which U S air power supports the advance into Germany. Before the Army Air Forces he studied at East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce.
An explosion at Sunflower Ordnance Works near De Soto Kansas killed Elvin T. Taylor of Ottawa Kansas. He died in the plant hospital about two hours after the blast. Damage was estimated at $15000. Details of the blast were not disclosed.
Two Texas servicemen were among nine killed when two B 26 bombers from Harlingen Army Air Field collided mid air Monday. Pfc Nathan B Vaden of Carrollton and Sgt Robert J Villarreal of Brownsville are named among the dead. others hail from Brooklyn San Francisco Los Angeles South St. Cloud Minn Athens Maine Cleveland Ala and Wichita Kan.
The first tire made in Texas was cured yesterday at the General Tire & Rubber plant in Waco. Plant manager Joseph Sloate said the occasion is significant though not full operation yet. Materials came from Akron with future Texas supply from Baytown synthetic rubber. Full production awaits more machinery.
In Dallas on January 11, elevator operators at the 27 story Mercantile Bank Building walked off for a Christmas bonus dispute. The crew demanded more than the 5 percent bonus, previously 10 percent, leaving all but one elevator tied up on the top floor.
A South Dallas man told police he was robbed by a "very considerate thief" during a long streetcar ride. He woke to find his watch and $24 stolen from his pockets, but he credited the thief with leaving his wallet and a dollar bill.

Hollywood January 31 Lupe Velez will probate assigns executor and one third of the late actress estate to Beulah Kinder secretary companion to the star. Kinder joins main heirs including Miss Velez mother Mrs Josefina Villalobos and the actress brother’s children. A sister Miss Josephine Anderson of San Antonio Texas failed to contest the will.
A fleet of trucks brings equipment for the Black Hills Passion Play at Paris Junior College Auditorium from January 15 to 19. The production, sponsored by Paris Lions, is staged with a premiere on Monday at 8 15 p m and daily student matinees at 2 00 p m. The historical drama traces to 1242 and has become a longstanding American summer event in the Black Hills.
