Charley Cox ends a 50 plus year career as a merchant with 30 years in Bonham and earlier time in Randolph. He plans to stay busy with gardening fishing or similar activities in retirement.
Dr. Denton A. Cooley performed a landmark operation at St. Luke's hospital in Houston. He removed a fully artificial dacron and plastic heart from Haskell Karp and implanted a living heart from a 40 year old donor woman from Lawrence, Massachusetts. The recipient's chest was closed after the heart began beating with one electric shock and was described as beating in good rhythm. The donor arrived by air but died minutes after arrival from irreversibly brain damage.
Bonham independent school district voters returned incumbent Robert Hodge to Place 7 and elected Jack Caudle to Place 6 in the annual school election. Hodge won 38 votes to 157 for C. B. Bryant and 29 for Bill Lucas. Caudle won 288 votes with Lyndell Purdy at 190 and Bill Estes 90. Total 570 votes cast. results to be canvassed April 21 and board reorganized for the year.
A Formosan freighter collided with a drifting oil barge upriver from the French Quarter, igniting flames across both vessels. Up to 25 of about 52 aboard were unaccounted for, with three seriously burned. The Union Faith sank at 2:58 a.m. as survivors were hospitalized in New Orleans.
Secretary of State William P. Rogers said the United States is not considering any immediate unilateral withdrawal of troops from Vietnam but did not rule out such a move later. He urged allies and Communists to reach a plan where both sides could withdraw forces this year.

Eight members of a single family returning from Easter church services died in a two car collision on U S 25W near Cobbin Kentucky. A ninth victim in a separate car also perished as both vehicles landed in a ditch. several victims were thrown from their cars.
ECTOR district officials Charles Bellows and Leroy Martin were returned to the school board with 24 and 23 votes respectively. Holdover members are Raymond Taylor Gaylen Murray Ernnost Hill Jr Curt Beazley and David Clark. SAVOY trustees elect Hutchins and Cox. Hutchins 50 Cox 3 third candidate Robert Merworth 29.
Incumbents S. E. Smith and Dwain Brunner won seats on the Wolfe City school board. Smith received 107 votes and Doyle 132 to gain a 3-year term, while Brunner retained his seat with 145 votes for a 2-year term. Other candidates for the 3-year term included Gardner 95, Rabb 68, Henslee 55, and London 4, with Clinton not seeking a 2-year term and Carleton Holt earning 118 votes for the 2-year post.
Dykes Askew Simmons known as The Forgotten American escaped Nuevo Leon Penitentiary hidden under a car seat. He was serving a commuted death sentence for the 1959 murder of Marta Hilda and Juan Manuel Villagomez in Monterrey. Authorities suspect he drove toward Texas with his brother Carroll after the roll call.
Saigon proposed a national reconciliation granting amnesty and a ballot place if the Viet Cong quit fighting and change their name. The offer would allow political participation as an opposition party, not as a Communist force, but Vietnam’s constitution blocks Communist activities. Viet Cong dismissed the proposal, while Ky warned the enemy counts on American impatience for a favorable settlement.
U S and Vietnamese mountain men captured Superstition Mountain after a three week offensive. The operation yielded two medical dispensaries a hospital 18 beds a communications center and large Viet Cong stockpiles. 55 guerrillas were killed while 42 allied troops died and more than 100 wounded.
A fishing trip on Lake Texoma ended in tragedy when Jack William Gardner and his 14 year old son Jac Jr. died after their 15 foot boat overturned. Also missing is 12 year old James Gardner. Bodies of Joseph J Courtney 50 and Courtney's son Bill 8 were recovered nearby. A three day search continues for the fifth victim as funeral plans for the drowned husband and son are delayed.
Funeral services for Dow Bell longtime USDA employee and former FHA county supervisor in Fannin County will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Cooper Sorrels Funeral Chapel Honey Grove. Rev. William H Cheatham will officiate with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Bell died Saturday night in a Bonham hospital at age 61 awaiting his 62nd birthday next Friday. He was born in Honey Grove April 14 1907. He married Rachel Ferguson September 28 1930 in Durant Oklahoma, who survives with two sons William B Bell and Don Bell Jr. a daughter Frances Bell. a brother Wyatt Bell. two sisters Mary Alice Meade and Zelma Bowman. and five grandchildren. Pallbearers will be George Pope Lester Cappleman Arthur Maxwell Joe T Adair Dail Johnson Tom Lockridge.
Israeli and Jordanian forces fought for about an hour along the ceasefire line 13 miles south of the Sea of Galilee. A Jordanian spokesman reported no casualties but said an Israeli jeep and a tank were damaged.
