Smiley Burnette Delights Crowd On Courthouse Lawn

Comic Smiley Burnette drew a crowd for a free first show on the courthouse lawn with plans for 4:30 and 7:30 performances. Merchants sponsored a Match Ya game awarding prizes worth about 568 dollars as shoppers toured 48 stores for coupon numbers. Burnette teased a beauty shop gag and was welcomed by Mayor Jess Magouirk and the Chamber of Commerce. Weather threatened but crowds overhead were expected to grow for subsequent shows.

Suits Filed For FM Right of Way Appraisal Set

Special commissioners were named to appraise seven tracts needed for widening FM 273 from US 78 east and north. County Judge Choice Moore announced. County Attorney Pat Beene filed condemnation suits in county court Friday. Appraisers are John S. Dickey Glendon Spencer and H A Buron. A hearing on the appraisals is set for April 23.

Car Stolen Here Found in Dallas

A car belonging to Jackie Mc Craw stolen in Bonham on March 10 was recovered in Dallas. Chief O R McKissack reported a suspect held in Dallas County jail and to be connected with Bonham and Fannin county officers after serving a sentence for driving while intoxicated and driving without a valid license. The suspect was arrested in Dallas on March 11 for driving while intoxicated.

Trustees Election Looms for Fannin County Schools Saturday

All Fannin County school districts vote Saturday with two or more trustees to be chosen per district. Bonham and Honey Grove list limited candidate slates while Bailey presents four contenders for three seats. Countywide, three county trustees are elected with several district candidates named across Dodd City Telephone Windom Gober Lannius Leonard Ladonia and Savoy among others. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bonham fire hall under general election laws.

Two Charged in Fannin County Cattle Thefts

Sheriff Hoyt Ivey announced that P. A. Wilson of Bokchito Oklahoma and Don Shackelford of Durant Oklahoma have been charged in connection with cattle thefts in Fannin County. Wilson was returned to Bonham from Durant and questioned before Grayson County and Sherman officials. The investigation expects more arrests as thefts in Texas and Oklahoma are being cleared. Some cattle were sold to packing houses while others went to feed lots or other ranchers.

Years of Service Certificates Awarded Two DPW Employees

Certificates for 20 and 15 years were awarded to Mrs. Kathleen Wright and Mrs. Lonzo Kilgore of the Department of Public Welfare in Bonham. Lloyd S. Sterling presented the honors as regional director. Wright, a field worker and area supervisor, began in 1942 and now oversees Fannin and Delta counties. Kilgore, a stenographer and receptionist, noted changes in programs from three to multiple usaid services and cited that 2,322 county residents receive assistance monthly totaling $134,395.
