Denton April 3 Caps and gowns will be worn at the annual spring exercises of the Denton High School on Monday May 30. Class speakers will participate with the baccalaureate sermon set for Sunday May 29. The article notes a shift from prior practice regarding graduation attire.
W N Richie a well known Telephone citizen died Sunday night around 10 o clock after pneumonia. Survived by wife, daughter Lois Little, and two sons J W Richie and Chandler Richie. Funeral at Baptist church Telephone led by Rev S R Smith with Rev Tom Reece assisting. Interment in Telephone Cemetery with Masons at grave.
J N Gribble 87 years old who lived at 506 Wilson Street died this afternoon after months of illness. He is survived by several children and his wife predeceased him. Funeral arrangements were not set as relatives determine arrival times.
Summers Putnam, a Lockhart native and ranchman at Throckmorton, died in an automobile accident near Athens. Mrs J B Putnam, his stepmother, was advised of the death and relatives traveled to Athens.
Mrs. George Calhoun wife of a Court of Criminal Appeals official was injured while rescuing her granddaughter from an enraged ram at their country home near Austin. The ram knocked the child down and pinned Mrs. Calhoun against a cistern. she suffered a broken right arm and other bruises as a servant drove the animal away.
Bonham social notes list Dallas visitors C M Watson and Thelma Pratt visiting relatives. Oklahoma deputy treasurer Billie Ray Dotson stayed with J E Neiman. Miss Cora Phillips and Miss Allie Lipscomb also in town. Mr and Mrs W H London discuss cotton plans. Supt H W Glass improving after ear trouble.
In Berino near El Paso on April 3, a family of seven was killed, spurring plans for a citizens vigilante committee. Dairyman Espinosa and six children died in a kitchen shooting after bandits demanded money. Sheriff Triviz of Dona Ana County faces pressure to curb further violence as residents discuss nightly patrols along the sparsely populated valley. Mexico lies 12 miles south.
Mr and Mrs Jack London of Bauty welcome a son born Sunday. The baby is their last born and everyone is doing well including grandfather W H London.
John Saunders, previously confined to his room with the flu, is improving and able to be up and around the house. Mrs. Saunders reportedly will not allow him to go to town yet.
New York City police report for 1931 notes youths aged 17 to 21 replacing middle aged offenders in murder, manslaughter and robbery as violence rises. 484 murder and manslaughter cases, 433 arrests, and 30 death sentences in 1931, the highest city total.
Armed robbers burned into the First State Bank of Rice ten miles north of Corsicana and disabled the vault. About $15 in pennies missing while about $4,000 in currency may have burned. Night watchman Andres Marrell was tied and blindfolded before being released. Five or six men reportedly fled north toward Dallas with high powered rifles as officials found no usable fingerprints.
Mrs Minnie Barron president announces a meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary to the Bonham Chamber of Commerce Wednesday at 4 o clock in Chamber rooms. All members urged to attend as important matters will be discussed with the C of C president Mayor Crawford and civic leaders invited.
Mrs. J. A. Huber of Vernon was elected president of the first district Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs at the closing session. Pampa was chosen host for the 1933 convention. The district set an all time high out of town registration with more than 100 delegates. Attendees included guests from Altus and Mangum Oklahoma and every federated club in the district.
The Favorite reports a Home Demonstration Club formed at Cottage Bend school community with 20 members and enthusiastic work. A program for H. D. Agent Miss Eldridge was planned. club members schedule a dessert and quilt sale for April 8. Mrs. Bessie Newell serves as president with Miss Jessie Bird as secretary. Cottage Bend lies about four miles west of Bonham in a thriving community.
Friends of R L Martin of Gober report his Sunday appendicitis operation by Drs Nevill and Woods went well on Monday with satisfactory condition. Many neighbors visited Allen Memorial Hospital to inquire about Mr Martin. Diamond and Silver Special advertised at Brannon's with items priced at 19.85 and 17.50.
The Savoy dramatic club visited the rural town area for a Welner and marshmallow roast. A bonfire crackled as the club toasted marshmallows and played games. attendees included Beulah Polson Nannie Kathryn McLemore Marjorie Sut May Bernice Cook Ella Florence Gist Fae Morrison Gene and Pauline Mauldin J W Moultin Bryant Penn Bob Spooner Claud Strickland Foster Ernest McCol Juan Mr and Mrs Olts Baker and Mr and Mrs Roy Booth.
