British Sailor Breaks Milk Drinking Record in Mild Coast Guard Challenge

Frank Fowler of Portsmouth England aboard the British frigate Puma won the milk chugging contest in Monterey beating American Coast Guardsman. He downed a quart in 6.0 seconds breaking George Busby’s 6.1 second mark. Fowler said he is not a milk drinker and prefers warm ale.

Bonham Trustees Seek Three Seats In Saturday Election

Bonham Independent School District voters set a Saturday election to name three trustees two of whom will be new. Six candidates compete for Places 3 and 4 with one incumbent unopposed for Place 5 Joe Denton Jr is unopposed. Polls open 7 a m to 9 p m at the gymnasium of T W Evans School with judge Dan Litzier and several election officials.

Unemployment Rises to 6 Percent in March

Washington reports unemployment climbed to 6 percent in March after two months of decline. Job losses were concentrated among 16 to 24 year olds entering or re entering the labor force. Average hourly earnings rose slightly to 3.56 dollars with weekly pay up due to a longer work week.

The Senate approved a public service jobs bill by 62-10 to place 150 000 unemployed people in health police fire recreation education welfare and related work. House action follows as Democrats push priority. Nixon may veto though the plan is shortened to a two year emergency program.

Four Charged in Bank Robbery Plot in Chicago Area

Burglars Loot Texaco Station in Trenton Break-in

Burglars broke a large glass door at the Texaco station on U. S. 69 and State 121 in Trenton Friday morning. They unlocked power, stole 29 gallons of gasoline and an adding machine, then shut off power and stopped a nearby clock at 2 40 a.m. Sheriff Dudley Jackson and Deputy H R Van Zandt reported the details.

Three Men Taken To Huntsville For Sentences

Three defendants who received prison terms were transported to Huntsville Friday by Deputy Sheriff Leonard Collingsworth and City Officer Sam Patton. The prisoners were Willie Ray Smith for burglary, Haskell Preston for burglary and auto theft, and Eddie Glenn Bell for burglary and auto theft.

Allied Base Overrun VC Capture Five Americans

VC overran a South Vietnamese base near the Laos Cambodia border and claimed five American advisers were captured. The base was retaken by South Vietnamese forces the next night as U S B 52s dropped 100 tons of bombs around Fire Support Base No 6. One American crewman died and another was wounded in a downed helicopter evacuation attempt.

Bondi Band Wins No 1 At Ennis Band Festival

Missing Woman Found Tangled in Fence Near Home

Victoria Kapchinskie, 74, left her East Central Texas home for a walk Wednesday. Deputies found her Thursday morning tangled in barbed wire four miles from home after a nightlong ordeal guarded by seven dogs.

Druggists Urged to End Tobacco Sales

The American Pharmaceutical Association urged U S drugstores to stop selling tobacco products. Delegates at the annual convention approved a resolution calling pharmacists to cease selling cigarettes and other tobacco products citing pharmacies as public health facilities. The association represents about 53 000 pharmacists nationwide.

Saturday Warmth Forecast for Bonham Area

The Bonham area expects fair and cooler tonight with clear skies and a rise to warmer conditions Saturday. Overnight readings dipped to 33 Friday morning with a Saturday low near 40 and a Saturday afternoon high in the mid 70s. Calley Freed From Stockade to house arrest at Fort Benning

Lt William L. Calley Jr released from the stockade under presidential order and placed under light guard and confined to Fort Benning. He may roam base, meet with lawyers, and receive visitors but cannot grant interviews as he appeals his My Lai massacre conviction. Cheers greeted his return as neighbors and spouses gathered outside the housing area.

Mitchell voices concern over Calley verdict impact

Attorney General John Mitchell said the Calley murder conviction could affect other officers and the Army chain of command. UAW Cancels Strike Threat With AMC Talks Ongoing

UPI reports the United Auto Workers canceled a 6:45 a.m. strike deadline against American Motors and agreed to work without a contract while negotiations continue. The union rejected AMC proposals twice, and AMC rejected a union council offer. Talks recessed after 1 am EST, with recall possible.
