A Senate Youth Affairs Committee plans a closed door hearing on brutality charges at Gatesville School for Boys. Senator Ron Bridges criticized the move calling it public mistrust. Senator Chris Cole said conclusions would be blocked by conflicting evidence.
Liquor Control Board Agent Ray Williams reported the arrest of a man on FM 12 near Bailey for possession of a quantity of liquor, charging violation of state liquor laws.
Eisenhower’s funeral train carried his body from Washington toward Abilene with thousands lining the route from Charlottesville to White Sulphur Springs. Mamie Eisenhower rode in the last car as the journey linked Washington to Kansas City and St. Louis to reach the former president’s boyhood home.
Bonham voters elect three aldermen in the annual city race. Ward 7 incumbent Dick Keene and Ward 1 incumbent Bud Moody face no opponents. At-large candidates include M D Anderson Sam Zumwalt and Glen May, with Gene Danner not seeking re election. Polls close at 7 pm.
Sgt. Ronnie Eugene Pace 22, son of Mr and Mrs L A Pace of Sherman and formerly Bonham residents, was killed in action in South Vietnam on Sunday March 30 1969. He had been in Vietnam since July 1968 and his death was conveyed to his parents Monday by a Defense Department representative. Funeral plans were incomplete awaiting the body’s arrival in Sherman.
U S Representative Clark Fisher from Texas was selected by Speaker John McCormack to join Rep Chester Mize of Kansas to represent the House at Dwight D Eisenhowers burial in Abilene Kansas. Fisher noted his admiration for the general and recalled their ties through the Armed Services Committee and NATO.
Police visited Ascot race track to run a long shot sting to trace thieves who staged a 10000 pound burglary. The raid yielded 80 pairs of special binoculars among the loot and sparked a wide search by investigators.
