Soldiers report life and customs in Manila Bay garrison
Located at Fort Cabuyao, P I, the party left San Francisco June 12 and reached Manila Bay June 26. They then traveled by smaller boats to inland quarters where they are quartered in a good place with ample food. They are now on garrison duty. Frank notes soldiers have rough treatment of natives but this is being stopped and native customs are entertainingly described. They claim 240 holidays yearly and join in celebrations. A Fort Worth reader seeks the address of an agency offering tickets to the 1893 World’s Fair in St Louis tied to a San Francisco mint. A Philadelphia firm S J and I Chapman sells coins, with 1896 dollars fetching about three dollars at their last sale a month ago, though the story of rail fare value was likely a mistake. The coins remain scarce and thus command a premium.
