The Waistcoat from Economy to Extravagance in Fashion
The article traces the waistcoat’s rise from an economy driven under Charles II to a decorative staple of European fashion. It notes Pepys’s diaries describe early forms and the shift from open to closed styles, evolving from underlayer to a long, embroidered outer piece, and the fashion’s eventual simplification by the late eighteenth century. It also touches on the term Pepys and notes on Joe Miller, wigs, and cultural anecdotes of the era.
