No further items stolen were valued. Evidence points to amateur work. In Virginia City a box car storing whiskey was broken into and three gallons stolen, with a suspect believed to have a key.
Ten men are dead and six dying after an explosion at the Leone mine of Western Canada Collieries in Alberta. The fire and smoke trapped scores of workers, with about seventy men in the mine at the time and only seven reaching the surface. Rescue efforts failed to reach the burning shaft as flames raged and families mourned.

A judicial dinner and Supreme Court reception occur later in January, with a February 7 congressional reception and a February 14 dinner for the Speaker of the House.
