Bluefield Community Hospital Drive Sets $2 Million Target
Bluefield community leaders solidified a minimum $2 million goal for the hospital fund drive at a First National Bank meeting. Cash and pledges near $1.56 million complement plans to raise the rest via revenue bonds for an $18 million, 250 bed facility with multiple specialty units and 24 hour emergency care. The city also plans to purchase Bluefield Sanitarium for $1.25 million and operate it as the new hospital before the main facility opens in late 1978 or 1979. The next drive report is set for Oct. 21.

Cockroaches Implicated As Asthma Trigger In Urban Areas
Dr. Benn Kang of Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center reports a high rate of cockroach allergy among asthma patients, especially in crowded urban housing. In experiments 22 of 60 patients reacted to cockroach derivatives, with many experiencing delayed and immediate attacks. Desensitization treatments are being explored to reduce allergic responses.
