The United Mine Workers voted to move their presidential election from 1977 to June 1977. Arnold Miller ceded control of the convention to delegate Harry Patrick amid debate over leadership and power shifts within the union.
Pat Murray of Peotone Illinois sold 120 acres and the lone prairie house on the land was saved by an Illinois architectural student who contacted Professor Paul Sprague. Smithsonian curators disassembled the 1850s precut lumber house for reconstruction next to the Hart House in Ipswich Massachusetts.
Tazewell Virginia Chief of Police Frank D. Plummer, 37, died of a self inflicted gunshot wound after the town council placed him on three months probation following multiple executive sessions. He was found in his car on Grapefield Road near the county line. The mayor said reasons for probation were not disclosed.
The court ruled the 1976 legislation creating seven new circuit judgeships is constitutional and applicable to all new posts. Bluefield Community Hospital fund drive tops 1.522 million in cash and pledges announced at University Club. The effort supports an 18 million, 250 bed facility to open in late 1978 or early 1979, with 500000 locally raised for construction and remaining funds for equipment. The city plans to buy Bluefield Sanitarium for 1.25 million to operate as part of the new hospital.
