Winds in West Virginia and Virginia Spark State of Emergency
Strong gusts and heavy rain from a hurricane like Helene hit southern West Virginia and Southwest Virginia causing widespread outages and prompting one county to declare a state of emergency. The National Weather Service issued high wind warnings to 60 mph and flash flood alerts through 8 45 p m for areas including the New River in Mercer Summers Monroe and Giles Counties. Raleigh County reported over 7300 outages by early afternoon.
