Lack Of Enforcement Blamed For West Virginia Mine Deaths

Massive West Coast brush fire driven by Santa Ana winds
A raging brush fire north west of Los Angeles, fed by Santa Ana winds, raged across Northern Los Angeles and southern Ventura counties. Thousands fled as the fire grew to more than 40 miles wide, destroying about 200 buildings and damaging 500 more. Evacuations were ordered for Topanga Canyon while hundreds of firefighters fought to contain the blaze near Malibu and Malibu Beach as temperatures topped 100. The dry 5 percent humidity and gusts exceeding hurricane force hindered efforts and prompted temporary freeway closures. A burned unidentified man was found in the fire zone and several firefighters suffered injuries.
