Washington dispatch reports that 222 U S slaughterhouses across regions were cited in a major OPS enforcement push on beef price controls. Officials warned the count could rise into the hundreds as multiple violations in some facilities were found, with tags issued in over 50 cities as the nationwide drive began involving about 1 500 inspectors.
District Price Stabilization Director Russell Nichols said 16 of 17 major slaughter houses in Charleston West Virginia violated 29 OPS regulations. Legal action to be delayed pending a full report. Violations included price gouging failure to mark meats by grades and failure to tag meats by cut type.
President Truman signed new draft regulations expanding eligibility to about 500,000 childless married men and aliens with permanent U.S. residence. The changes, aimed at aligning with the June act, allow 17 year olds to volunteer with parental consent, require conscientious objectors to do two years of national service, and set age group calls to balance quotas.
Washington accuses Max Siskind and William Boyle of concealing financial ties after Siskind bought 23 law cases for 150000 dollars in 1949. General Ridgway urged moving the suspended Korean truce talks from Kaesong to Songhyon six miles east to reduce interruptions as jets battle nearby. Allied and Red liaison officers failed to convene at Kaesong for a fourth session to restart armistice talks, with no meeting yet materializing. The U N liaison chief said he would meet the Reds at 10 am to press resumption, while the communists demanded immediate formal negotiations and safeguards against interruptions near Kaesong.
Paris report says Dr A M Dogliotti of the University of Turin used an artificial heart to assist a dying 50 year old patient with a large tumor compressing the heart. The device ran for 20 minutes during tumor removal before normal circulation resumed. patient survived. It marks a partial replacement, not full bypass, in surgical history.
A roaring tornado tore through Waupaca county central Wisconsin this afternoon, hurling six persons to their deaths. About 30 minutes later another tornado struck Columbia county to the south, killing one more person.
State police report a lie detector will be brought from Charleston to question persons likely to know details of the death of Mrs Josephine Helen Adkins a 48 year old Bluefield widow found dead in a Tazewell street rooming house. Autopsy shows probable broken neck and head injuries. Local officers probe possible foul play as autopsy confirms fatal injuries earlier theory of natural causes was challenged.
The FBI arrested Hollie Stump, 49, an auto dealer of Parkersburg, charging him with conspiring with Dennis V. Layfield to violate the federal reserve act by authorizing $129,000 in insufficient fund checks to be honored at the Wood County bank.

Williamson West Virginia September 26 Fleming Hurley aged 42 was convicted of second degree murder despite the wordless testimony of his 90 year old father Mumbo Hurley who could not speak due to a speech defect and answered questions only by nodding. The defense seeks to have the conviction set aside.
