A Republican sub committee stays in the city to hear witnesses on the Beaver pond dispute and Ford Lilly contest as tension among factions grows. Witnesses describe yesterday’s proceedings at the city hall while a November ticket campaign looms.
Saratoga N Y September 24 Republican leaders hail Governor Odell as party head after a midnight conference pushed aside Morgan candidate George Sheldon. Odell refuses to run with Sheldon and is renominated for governor. State Senator Francis Higgins gains the lieutenant governor nomination by acclimation after a heated convention fight.
In West Virginia after several meetings among New River and Kanawha operators Plymouth Coal Mining Company controlled by Covington capital signs the union scale. President Roosevelt arrived this morning by the Pennsylvania railroad. He slept much during the Richmond to Columbus run and read after leaving Columbus. He said he feels bully with only leg pains, and expects to be about all right in a few days.
Burrell Johnson, a young Negro who last month attacked Mrs Maggie Clow, was hanged in the jail yard at New Kent court house. He went to the gallows without confessing, was baptized at the foot of the scaffold, remained calm, and died as his neck broke in the fall. A small witness crowd watched, while a larger crowd gathered outside.
The firm Hawkins & Hutcherson dissolves by mutual consent with N O Hawkins retiring from the general merchandise shop at 14 Stuart Street. A metropolitan committee of Methodist Episcopal preachers met privately at Zane Street Church in Wheeling to reinvestigate serious charges against Rev. T. H. Sharon former pastor of Union Church Glen Easton Marshall County. The case centers on alleged seduction of a guest’s daughter resulting in a child and accusations of wolf in sheep’s clothing. The inquiry was referred to the New Martinsville conference as original papers were missing.
In Frederick circuit court James M. Keogh aged about sixty was found guilty of criminal assault on Miss Estelle V. Poffenbarger. The jury recommended mercy. The attack occurred April 8 near Myersville after a pursuit in the mountains. Keogh, a clock mender from Edgemont Maryland, faces possible sentence under Maryland law with a prior year term for larceny noted.
A large crowd of cow owners gathered at Roanoke city hall to oppose changes to Councilman Antrim’s ordinance. Resolutions were passed urging the council to enforce the existing law prohibiting cattle from roaming within city limits.
