Bluefield College to Open Fall Term with New Faculty
Bluefield College launches the fall term Monday with 395 enrolled students. New hires include Vera Lynn history and William Boisture engineering professors, Forrest Marker English, Mrs James Mann English, C W Jackson physics, Ella Nash Jarrell music, plus two cooks and a new dietician. Three faculty vacancies remain, five faculty houses added for veteran student housing, classes begin 8:30 AM with schedules underway.

Motorboat Noise Disturbs West Virginia Court
In Charleston on a Saturday, a small outboard motorboat on the Kanawha River near the courthouse disturbed Common Pleas Judge Charles Ritchie’s court. Seven attorneys sent a letter to the newspaper supporting the judge’s account that the noise came from a motorboat, while police couldn't act due to a skywriting plane at 15,000 feet. The lawyers called for similar publicity to the original report to keep the record straight.

Fourth Polio Case Reported In Mineral County
Fourth poliomyelitis victim in Mineral county this year is 11 year old Lewis Judy. He has been taken to Monongalia General Hospital Morgantown. His father George B E Judy manages a local chain grocery store. Two other polio victims are in Monongalia and one is in Martinsburg hospital.

Narrows Virginia September 23 Millard Epling 21 of Narrows was killed when the Norfolk and Western Powhatan Arrow struck his truck near the N and W passenger station en route to a gravel unit. The truck owned by Hopkins and Walker contracting firm was demolished. Epling unattached son of Mr and Mrs Charles Epling of nearby Narrows.

Grand Jury To Probe Gambling At Wheeling
Ohio County Prosecutor Charles Thienfeld said gambling in Wheeling would be referred to the October grand jury. The Wheeling News Register reported seven race book setups and various dice and card games operating in the city. The prosecutor noted the jury can summon witnesses and has wide power, while the city had relied on periodic fines totaling about 85,000 dollars annually. He said he had no prior complaints in 11 years as prosecutor and that earlier juries urged some control.

Huntington West Virginia Sept 23 UPI Liquid propane gas plants at Kenova and Charleston will cost about 890000 each and be ready by Dec 1 to avert winter gas shortages. Kenova plant on a 10 acre plot will have 37 tanks of 30000 gallon capacity. the converted gas could reach 20000000 cubic feet daily. The Huntington district, near large gas fields, met home needs last winter but curtailed industrial supply during cold spells.

At 6:30 pm two men were arrested after a three vehicle crash at Bluefield avenue and Spruce street. Patrolmen Lilly and Lambert investigated and charged Lawrence Baldwin with reckless driving and Lloyd McMillen with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
