Mercer Fire Loss in August Reaches 17720
The Mercer county fire losses for August totaled 17720, up 14120 from 1923. Eleven fires occurred causing insured property losses of 47950 across nine residences a store and a dry cleaning shop. Causes included defective flue electric wires gasoline and kerosene explosions matches and unknown origins. One death was reported Ratcliff killed when a lightning struck home on the Bluefield Bramwell road in Brushfork.

Mother and three children drown in Fort Point Channel
Boston reports that a car plunged through a bridge railing into Fort Point Channel, killing five, including Mrs Helen Mara of Charleston and four children Jennie nine Elizabeth seven George four Theodore eleven and Henry. The chauffeur Michael Dobroval was also recovered.

Eight Norfolk and Western workers injured in siding collision
Eight members of a Norfolk and Western section crew were injured when a motor car sideswiped a freight train near Devon Sunday night. Funeral of E. T. Stiff Largely Attended
The funeral service for E. T. Stiff was held Sunday at Grace Methodist Church at 2 30 PM, conducted by Rev. Frank Y. Jackson under Bluefield lodge No 85 A F and A M. The church was at capacity with friends, music by the Grace Methodist choir, and flowers. The remains were laid to rest in Walnut Grove cemetery after the Masonic graveside service.
