Washington speculates on who will succeed Henry A. Wallace as secretary of commerce. William L. Clayton, Eric Johnston, and Paul Porter are named as possible candidates, with Clayton already tied to state duties and Johnston noted for business leadership. Porter, on leave as OPA head, would shift from the FCC chair.
Washington reports on Henry Wallace's ouster to bolster Byrnes and seeks clear U S foreign policy. Charleston dispatch reports the road commission ordered removal of about 40 graves at Woodland cemetery Cedar Grove Kanawha County to widen U S 60 and to build an overpass over the New York Central tracks. Bids close October 8 with most graves relocated to Montgomery Memorial Oak Hill and Cunningham cemeteries.
Akron announces the engagement of Martha Parke Firestone to William C Ford. Miss Firestone, a Vassar senior and Foxcroft graduate, is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Firestone. Ford, son of Mrs. Edsel Ford and the late Edsel Ford of Detroit, is a Hatch-Kiss graduate and Yale student, after three years in the U.S. Navy Air Corps.
Funeral services for Foy Lee Boyd 34 of Ada will be held Sunday at 2 PM at his home. He was killed Thursday at Persinger by contact with a 6900 volt high tension line while installing a sign for Sanford Signs Inc. Burial in Wilson Cemetery. Also reported: D. N. Stephens 47 of Portsmouth Va former Bluefield resident died Sept 18 in Portsmouth hospital after a heart ailment. Survived by widow Rowena Sprinkle Stephens and two children. Body to Bluefield for funeral arrangements. remains to be at Mrs. Frazier L Hoops home in Bluefield until services.
The Darkee park commission noted from map comparisons that a 126 foot by 30 foot by several feet thick break occurred. Dr McTigue suggested rock fall at Niagara Falls, but Collins doubted the rock fall alone could trigger tremors felt citywide, proposing an earthquake as the cause.
The Rev. Robert E. Long of Fittsburg Pennsylvania succeeds Rev. L. C. Miller as pastor of the Church of the Nazarene on Bluefield avenue. Long, a West Virginia native born near New Martinsville, has served pastorships in Carmichaels Pittsburgh and Shadyside and spent ten years in evangelistic work across 40 states Canada and Mexico. He and his wife plan morning devotional broadcasts on WHIS next week under the Greater Bluefield Ministerial association.
Memphis Sept 20 three field grade airforce officers admitted fault for beating Associated Press photographer Allen Snipes after a football game. Lt Col Wendell van Sickle Lt Col Robert W Lennox and Major Roy I Barnes made written apologies and restitution while disciplinary action is begun under the articles of war. An investigation found officers argued and scuffled after the game between Oklahoma City University and the air transport command and Snipes tried to take a photo. Snipes was knocked to the ground beaten and kicked his camera damaged and wristwatch stolen.
J. Hudson Huffard of Bluefield Virginia is named in the National Furniture Review September 1946 issue as one of four furniture trade personalities in Who's Who in 1948-47. The biographical sketch was reprinted in The Furniture Review from Who's Who in America.
The United States charged Yugoslavia with failing to cooperate in keeping order in the trieste area and condemned pro Slav elements for obstructive and terroristic actions. A formal note to Marshal Tito's foreign ministry rejected Yugoslav claims of improper treatment and cited violence against Yugoslav opponents in Venezia Giulia under Anglo American control.
Shepherdstown reports a fatal crash on route 44 near here and Sharpsburg with Russell Lewis Maunch killed and Howard Stotler seriously injured. Stotler hospitalized in Hagerstown. Also notes radio station approval for Oak Hill and political appointment in Charleston, plus a suit to compel record keeping in Beckley Mount Hope and four injured in a Kanawha Boulevard crash.
United Nations diplomats report Greece crisis faded from focus after the Soviet Union vetoed an American bid for on the spot probing Greek border incidents. The council defeated measures to keep the case active, with Japan and other allies weighing future steps as Secretary General Lie stated he reserved the right to investigate independently if warranted.
Detroit Sept. 20 Guy Brown 21 star University of Detroit halfback was arrested on a purse snatching charge hours before a local intra city game with Wayne University. A theater tackle by patrolman Frank Goran led to Brown’s capture after Mrs Augusta Cische alleged theft and identified Brown.
Paris dispatch reports Secretary Byrnes kept silent on Henry Wallace's resignation. He did not comment or request Wallace's stepping down, though he conferred with Senators Vandenberg and Connally and pressed for complete clarification of U S foreign policy amid deteriorating world conditions. Intimates say Byrnes avoided political considerations and offered no public reaction.
President William Blizzard of United Mine Workers District 17 defends Mrs. Meyer's critique of miners medical programs calling it accurate and a racket to be cut. The West Virginia Coal Association rebutted Meyer's remarks as erroneous while noting doctors and hospitals should defend the system.

A group of Shrewsbury cab drivers struck yesterday evening about 6 o'clock tying up business until 9 15 p m when eight of the 14 men returned to work The dispute began after a driver was fired for sleeping in his cab while on duty Owner Lee Shrewsbury said the strike stemmed from unresolved issues with the driver firing Orrin Simpson a spokesman said other issues existed In a meeting the owner set new rules drivers could follow or quit He agreed to reinstate the discharged driver Six drivers rejected the terms and were given a choice of working or quitting The town carried on limited service with eight cabs operating and Shrewsbury said he would drive if needed
West Virginia Tuberculosis and Health association elected Mrs. F. L. Black of Bluefield and Mrs. Edwin Robinson of Fairmont to honorary membership on the state board of directors. Other directors at large include E. H. Blankenship of Williamson, the Rev. Winton Houch of Bluefield, H. L. Idleman of Keyser, Glen A. Keister of Fairmont, Dr. Co. F. McClintock of Williamsburg, Okey L. Patterson of Mt. Hope, W. A. Smith of Parkersburg, E. M. Suniey of Morgantown, and Dr. Walter E. West of Huntington.

A committee of the Ohio Valley Transportation board forecast 900000 railroad cars would be needed to haul coal from Ohio valley mines in the last quarter of the year. The request would average 26 percent more cars than during the same period in 1945, with concerns the supply could not meet demand. The report, signed by E C Perkins, notes production limited by car availability and cites efforts by railroads and the office of defense transportation to secure rolling stock. Perkins is sales manager for Appalachian Coals Inc.
Delegates argued the amendment would be needlessly humiliating to Bulgaria given its good record on the Jewish question. They added that Britain should instead transfer its anxieties from Bulgarian Jews to Jews in Palestine.
