Linda Edwards a Miss USA contestant from Hot Springs Arkansas describes a hectic experience but a wonderful one. She says she is not nervous about the judging ahead and would not trade the experience for anything.
Shirley Dickson of Amarillo representing Texas in the Miss USA contest caused amusement by saying West Virginia is "so cute" and she would like to take it home and put it in her back yard.
Linda, Baylor University freshman, is among 42 contestants competing in London for Miss World. If she wins, her college education would be delayed a year. Activities include a fashion show, horseback riding, barbecues, a parade, and a tea with Gov Barron before the final ball and finale judging beauty over looks and charm.
The Atomic Energy Commission announced the Soviet Union carried out a multimegaton nuclear explosion in the Arctic on Wednesday. Sweden’s authorities earlier reported a 17 megaton blast, equaling 17 million tons of TNT.
President Kennedy urged restoring nearly 1.4 billion dollars cut from overseas economic and military assistance. Rusk and Kennedy warned the cut would cripple U S world leadership and hinder Alliance for Progress and Peace Corps efforts, linking aid to trade and jobs in developing countries. In Nicholas County West Virginia an elderly man Newman Meadows about 78 and his daughter Hilda Perrine were killed in a two-vehicle crash on West Virginia 39 near Nettie. Police said a passing attempt by 16 year old John H Schmidt triggered the collision.

In Massachusetts Edward Kennedy wins the Democratic nomination with about 69 percent of the vote while George Cabot Lodge tops Laurence Curtis for the Republican nod. Kennedy and Lodge, both first-time candidates, launch campaigns amid anticipated policy clashes with President Kennedy’s programs.
The Senate passed a sweeping trade bill by 78 to 8 to open markets and aid U S industries against foreign competition. It extends the 28 year old trade law to 1967 and grants authority to cut tariffs by up to 50 percent and to negotiate elimination of duties on items making up 80 percent of world trade with the European Common Market.
Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees back a joint resolution vowing to halt Marxist influence in Cuba by any means including arms if necessary. The measure, aligned with the Monroe Doctrine and Rio Treaty, will go to President Kennedy for signature and calls for U S action with OAS and anti Castro Cubans. The Air Force selected six Edwards Air Force Base pilots for the X20 Dynasoar first flight. Captain Albert H. Crews Jr., 33, is among the planned crew, training at Edwards. His Alexandria Louisiana parents and Edwards wife Grace with three children live at the base.
City and county officers said they could not locate Marvin Brooks who failed to appear for a hearing on a felonious assault charge and a peace warrant before Magistrate Henry Sargent. Sheriff Bazzie said no lead exists yet and Mercer Prosecutor Bivens asked for his arrest. The notice names Brooks as a 32-year-old Bluefielder previously released on recognizance.
Oxford Mississippi AP A Mississippi chancery judge blocked James Meredith from entering the University of Mississippi on the eve of his arrival. The injunction cites the Mississippi constitution and sets a hearing for October 22. Federal marshals and U.S. Attorney General Kennedy clash with state authorities over the case as Meredith plans the 50 mile trip to Oxford amid campus tension.
