Seventeen Miners Entombed At Algoma

An explosion at the Algoma mine left seventeen men unaccounted for as rescue efforts began. Two of the fated workers were Black, with many others from Virginia and nearby states reported missing. Authorities say the blast affected only a local section of the mine and fear for the entombed men remains high.

Twelve bodies recovered at Algoma mine disaster

Special report from North Fork says by midnight twelve bodies retrieved from the Algoma mine with five more expected before daylight, bringing total victims to seventeen. Police court notes recount multiple minor offenses with fines, including Belle White and Lizzy Grady in Tin Can Alley and various drunks and a domestic incident.

Baseball scores from major leagues in four cities

On the Ball Field at Philadelphia the Phillies beat the Athletics 7 to 6 in the first game with Iberg and Douglass behind the plate for Philadelphia and Willis and Kittridge for Boston. In the second game Philadelphia won 4 to 2 as White and Shea pitched and Pittinger and Moran caught. At New York Brooklyn defeated New York 7 to 2 with Matthewson and Bowerman pairing and Ritter catching Newton. In Cincinnati Chicago won 8 to 6 behind Thielman and Bergen with Lundgren and Kling behind the plate. In St Louis Pittsburgh triumphed 6 to 1 as Wicker and Weaver pitched with Leever and Phelps catching O Day.

Barboursville Kentucky reports arrival of three car loads of material for storage tanks with two more cars billed. Work to start immediately. London correspondent says forty cars of pipe for the pipeline under construction have billings, a condition along rail access points. Leases have risen sharply with bids likely higher. Operators hold contracts for multiple wells and more machinery will be moved to the field to fulfill them.

Woody's Offense Capital Grime Remanded Without Bail

Greensboro dispatch reports J W Woorly a Lynchburg man and ex Blue fielder arraigned in justice court on a capital charge of criminal assault on a thirteen year old girl. He was remanded to jail without bail awaiting grand jury action. The alleged victim testified before about 500 spectators. defense lawyers sought details as Woody laughed at times. Witness said she was under fourteen, drugged wine used, then coerced into woods at pistol point. No further witnesses were called. he will testify after indictment. Woody shares a jail cell with Victor Barnes awaiting trial for a seven year old girl assault.

Pastor Blames Agitators Over School Controversy

In Indianapolis patrons pulled children from an Evansville school amid claims a girl named Mabel Smith had negro blood. Nine physicians split on her lineage, officials questioned Mrs Wade of a local home, and after testimony the parents allowed children back to class.
