The White House warned that a military invasion of Haiti could occur within a short time frame, signaling growing urgency among officials to address instability, with conversations about possible operations and international support underway.
Georgia Pacific announced a $12 million hardwood sawmill for Green Valley Mercer County at the WV Economic Development Council meeting. The plant will start with 51 local jobs in early 1996 and potential direct and indirect jobs exceed 150. It will produce 20 million board feet of hardwood lumber annually, alongside an adjacent OSB operation in Mt. Hope with 131 workers. Caperton and Mortensen described the Princeton site as strategically located with strong infrastructure to supply timber from private landowners, with 65-70 percent of timber procurement from private lands.
Wednesday Personalities reports Mick Jagger will host a Saturday reception at the governor's mansion in Denver for Colorado and British government and business leaders. The Rolling Stones tour begins Thursday and Britain's consul in Dallas notes Jagger offered to help boost the economy. Governor Roy Romer has prior commitments and will not attend. invited guests include Rep Patricia Schroeder and Sen Ben Nighthorse Campbell.
On Thursday September 15 at noon Harold Patterson, newly appointed assistant director of the McDowell County Economic Development Authority, will discuss pending and developing projects at the Welch Chamber meeting at the County Public Library. Patterson takes over as director January 1.

Support came from residents like William Aker and Andrew Peters while attorney Kelly Poe led opposition over procedural filings. A Bible bearing Mildred Trent urged mercy and Helen Arnold warned of political and business reputations at stake.
Mercer County officials seek a responsible party to take over the Cumberland Public Service District water system serving 52 households and the Cumberland Industrial Park. West Virginia American Water Company wants the district kept intact until a permanent solution is found as grant and loan funds may total about 1 million dollars. The district’s three PSD members resigned in March amid mandates and meeting requirements.
Dr. Ram P. Bhasin, a 19 year BRMC ER physician, won 156000 plus interest after a federal jury found race and age discrimination in his 1992 firing. Hospital contends he falsified time records and disrupted ER operations. Jury awarded 156662.40 to the plaintiff. motions to follow in U.S. District Court in Bluefield.
Mercer County Circuit Judge John Frazier sought to hire his own bailiff after retirement of Gordon Swartz. The Mercer County Commission and Sheriff Meadows challenged the move, arguing state law entrusts bailiff duties to the sheriff. Justices of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals heard arguments and will issue a written opinion later.
