In Athens a burned-out pump or dry well left a town of about 1000 without water for up to five days. The main well pump was removed for inspection, with repair expected if the pump is the issue. A second well barely provides a trickle, and residents are urged to obtain water from nearby areas or use private wells while the town studies deep-well options.
Dr John J Ma hood Mercer County health director issued a warning about using water from unfamiliar or un approved sources. E coli and dysentery risk cited. Residents should boil water ten minutes and add 12 to 15 drops of chlorine per gallon, then let stand twenty minutes before cooking or drinking. Sept 19 set as a Meanwhile date.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. urged U.S. policy reversal on admitting Communist China to the United Nations after a talk with U.S. Ambassador Arthur Goldberg. He called for moral restraint in Vietnam and said negotiations require give and take while noting China’s belligerence. Goldberg said Washington has offered unconditional talks for peace in Vietnam but awaits a response from North Vietnam.

A 27 year old man Roger L Hoffman alias Roger Smith of Pikeville Kentucky and Detroit Michigan and a 16 year old Mingo County girl were arrested and charged in an armed robbery at Panther Thursday afternoon. The girl was taken to Welch after extradition and Hoffman was held in Pikeville awaiting extradition. Chapman 60 of Panther reported being assaulted and losing 400 dollars in the incident.

Judge Louis T. Holland denied a writ of habeas corpus to overturn Jack Ruby's murder conviction. The two day hearing addressed Ruby's attorneys challenge to Judge Joe B. Four fatalities in Virginia on Friday pushed the year’s road toll to 714, with victims including Staunton resident Paul Luther Bayne 37 killed in Augusta County, Richmond resident Mildred Eva Jones 41 struck near Broad Street Road, Charles Hudson 48 of Johnstown Pennsylvania killed west of Falmouth, and Leroy Chapman Jr. 31 of Waverly struck on Virginia 40 near Waverly.
