In Rio Janeiro police intensify action against radicals amid a treaty discussion. Officials plan a short recess as Bulgarians review the terms, while another crackdown targets anarchist activity and radical hubs as authorities confiscate a radical newspaper and shutter gathering places.
Washington September 10 union leaders in the steel industry call a strike for September 22 to press for a conference with United States Steel Corporation. The 24 international unions warn the action will affect the entire industry and relate to working conditions and collective bargaining.
The American Federation of Labor denounces attempts to suppress union rights in western Pennsylvania. It cites barred meetings and denied permits, accusing steel interests and mill town officials of obstructing free speech and assembly while seeking presidential mediation.
Maurice Bailey of Jackson Maine aged sixteen returned from war as a hero. He secretly boarded a transport two years ago and crawled across a shell torn field in the Toul sector to save a colonel and two majors of the twenty sixth division. Paris and St Germain Sept 10 The Roumanian and Serbian delegations failed to sign the Austrian peace treaty today. Belgrade must decide their stance while some delegates favor signing despite minority clauses. Dr Karl Renner departed Vienna to stabilize the government prompting relief in conference circles. The Bulgarian treaty likely will be handed to its delegation Friday in Paris at an informal ceremony.
Rioting near Scollay Square in Boston left an unidentified man dead, a woman shot and severely wounded, and a police officer beaten and hospitalized in serious condition. The incident occurred tonight as unrest escalated.
Major General Leonard Wood told the senate military committee that a regular army of 225000 to 350000 plus an organized reserve suffices for now. He backs six months training, a strong general staff, and an independent air service, warning that four million reserves must be equipped to avoid past failures. He notes new officers need room to grow and questions six lieutenant generals and thirty-two major generals in the plan.
General Pershing led the first division down Fifth Avenue amid a five mile flower strewn route and 2,000,000 cheering New Yorkers in a final great wartime review. He dismounted at Washington Square receiving flowers from Knights of Columbus and a kiss from Belgium’s primate Cardinal Mercier.
