Tropical storm effects hit a 60 mile square zone in the Rio Grande Valley Texas with communications and power lines down. Special trains of doctors and nurses ordered to the area amid fears of a large death toll as victims are searched.
AP reports wide area in the Rio Grande valley paralyzed by damaged communications after a Gulf of Mexico hurricane. At least 200 injured and possible deaths feared as Brownsville Harlingen and San Benito suffer extensive destruction. Governor Miriam Ferguson sends a relief train of surgeons and nurses while Kingsville food and water dustrips move in.
Sept five reports from Corpus Christi show a hurricane ripping 200 miles toward northern Mexico. It razed small buildings and damaged fruit groves while Brownsville remained cut off. Rockport sustains about 1 million dollars in damage as Laredo notes a southwest path toward Monterrey. Harlingen reports widespread housing damage and rail line impact as the storm moves inland.
Detroit reports Ford Motor company raises wages for skilled labor to 4.80 a day from 4.00 with a five day week and eight hour days. The Virginia Republican leaders decide to launch the state campaign with a mass meeting in Tazewell on September 16. GOP candidates Henry Wise, Fred McWane, J. Powell Royall and others will headline a two o'clock rally, signaling an extensive drive through counties and cities ahead of the November 7 election.
Richmond Virginia September 5 Fred W McWane Republican candidate for governor said in a formal statement that nothing toward a decisive meeting of the problems of the day was accomplished by the general assembly in its recent session urging Virginians to think deeply about the acts.
Vermont joined the repeal movement as 41,279 supported repeal to 20,572 against. Rutland city 3,532 to 681, Montpelier 1,358 to 535, Burlington 3,866 to 1,099. statewide result favored repeal with a 14-delegate convention elected to meet later in Montpelier to ratify the twenty-first amendment.
In Watkins Glen New York a seven point buck deer has spent eleven days confined on a rocky ledge above a gorge. Authorities plan a corn trail baited with Michigan State University attractant to coax the animal toward a bridge crossing. State police guard the site as park officials weigh keeping the deer where it is until weather forces change.
