Friends in Bluefield mourn the death of Guy Mastin who died yesterday in Asheville after a fall injury. Word had reached here of his serious injury and Mrs Mastin was en route to his bedside when he passed.
Frank Chalmers, longtime Bluefield figure, died in Philadelphia at age 83. A former store manager for Southwest Virginia Improvement Company and Pocahontas Fuel, he lived in Bluefield, North Carolina, and Williamport before settling with his stepdaughter in Philadelphia. He was remembered as a devout Christian with many friends in the region.
The body of C H W S Scott father of Thomas H Scott of this city who died Friday at Rt Marys hospital Huntington was brought to Bluefield last night and taken to the home of Thomas H Scott on Boone street. At 215 this afternoon the cortege will leave the residence of Mr Guoltana and go to Bramwell where services will be held at 3 oclock from the Methodist Church. Hay 8 W Moots pastor of the First Presbyterian church and Rev Jo A Baylor pastor of Bland Street Methodist church will assist Rev J H Yankee in the service under the auspicacy of the Bramwell Masonics lodge. Interment will be made in the cemetery of Freeman.
Robert Talbart seven-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Walter Talbert of 207 Barger direct was struck by an automobile on Bluefield avenue near Mercer afreat about 8 oclock. The driver Luther Williams stopped within feet. The boy was rushed to Bluefield Sanitarium for examination and held for observation but hospital report says not seriously injured.
Residents of Lowe Virginia report concern over the disappearance of Payne an eighty one year old African American man who left his home yesterday morning. He was last seen walking on the road between Atont calm and Matoaka near Henry Hopkins home. He is a long time resident of Lowe and is remembered as a favorite figure in the community. Any information about his whereabouts is urged by the local residents.
Postmaster General New reshuffles railway mail service as reforms move through the Washington day. A bid to operate the air mail route between Chicago Saint Paul and Philadelphia reaches the post office departments for consideration.
R Johnson aged 47 or 48. Norfolk and Western material foreman for six years, died last evening at 6 from leukemia at his residence 101 Highland Avenue after lingering illness. Born Fayette County December 6 1874, he married Annis Rubin December 28 1898 and leaves two children and a widow. Funeral Monday at Bluefield Methodist Church with interment Maple Hill Cemetery and Masonic rites.
Last night more than 1,600 people filled the Lowry Furniture Company showroom on Princeton avenue for the finals of the annual August sale which began July 24 and ended yesterday. The Lewis Furniture Co. reported a very successful period selling furniture to local homes as sales staff and promotions drew crowds and keepers busy. The event, with store floors opening at 8 and ceremonies at 8:40 ending by 9, drew a packed crowd eager for bargains and home furnishings for winter days ahead.

Mrs C A Hypes and Tilson apartments spend weekend with Mrs B H M Brown in Coalwood W Va. Mrs G Henry Harman of Tazewell shopped in the city. Ray Wheeler and family of Mabao named daughter Shirley Jean Wheeler. Mr and Mrs William Kellett of Columbus Obid visiting Mrs Merlett's brother J F Butherlaggiat Bahamee. Mr and Mrs A J Harman and Bill of Blackford guests of Mr and Mrs May 8 B Dillon for dinner. Harman and company to visit Felaliven at Steelyburg. Bobbie Howe admitted to St Luke's Hospital after operation and doing well.
The Wyefeld Chamber of Commerce aims to publicize a new road from Parkersburg through Bluefield to Asheville and Atlanta via the Southern Touring Number of the American Motorist magazine. Plans include ads in Bluefield and feeder routes through Pittsburgh and Clarksburg to attract northern travelers this fall. Local hotels, restaurants, and garages to be canvassed. Robinson predicts vast tourist benefit and urges bold bids to capture travel dollars.
In the Southeastern tour book the route from Huntington and Parkersburg through Bluefeld is noted as ready. The route will be added to the master Map in the fall and winter touring number as a major feature for this winter. The chamber expresses cautious optimism about the project.
