Labor Day weekend signals the symbolic end of summer for many Americans. AAA Travel Agency in Bluefield reports heavy travel as families take short three day vacations before school resumes. Travelers favor quick trips close to home and many limit plans to the three day holiday.
FDIC announced Ameribank Inc has assumed insured deposits of First National Bank of Keystone after its failure. Keystone customers may use checks through Tuesday while 1,300 Social Security and SSI checks are processed. McDowell County National Bank reports calm, patient customers as operations shift smoothly.
Janet Runyon of McDowell County National Bank described relief as the institution agreed to pay out cash to direct deposit accounts suspended by the Keystone bank collapse. The bank offered the service free of charge as a goodwill gesture, with about 85 customers served so far and more to come when third week checks are issued. FDIC officials praised the patience and cooperation of Keystone customers.

BLUEFIELD reports the final summer Main Street Concerts ended Friday with local resident Jody Neal delivering a pop rock and country set at Chicory Square. It capped the 12th season, featuring 18 shows and 20 performers, drawing downtown residents and visitors alike. Beth Andrick called the summer wonderful as the series extended into later Fridays.
