Seattle reports a bomb killed Pearl Kongsle in her front yard amid linked poisonings of her niece Betty Jean Baker and Baker's husband Maj. Robert D. Baker. Detectives probe an embittered acquaintance while relatives seek names of suspects as neighbors recall the deadly blast.
Grace Methodist Church pastor Rev. N W Looney spoke to the South Bluefield Kiwanis Club at the Pinnacle Restaurant presenting films of Jerusalem and a history of his journey. Kiwanis planned the State Convention in Clarksburg for September 27 to 29 with several members elected as delegates.

Police investigated reports of looting after two-day break ins. Charlie Landreth of Winston Salem reported $48 worth of items stolen from his unlocked Raleigh Street lot car between 1 and 8 a.m. Sept 3. West Virginia Home Finance Co on Jefferson Street reported about $3.75 taken from candy and stamp boxes after a late Wednesday or early Thursday entry through a rear restroom window.
Communist led mobs attacked police stations and patrols across Calcutta and Howrah in a four day riot, killing ten or more and wounding at least 37. The army was deployed to restore order as police and paramilitary forces faced coordinated assaults and elevated casualties.

The society is Virginia’s largest private adoption agency reporting 394 babies cared for in 1958 and 117 placed with Virginia families, including four Tazewell County babies and two others in local adoptive homes.

An 18 year old Matoaka youth Obie Wingo Harman was hospitalized with a leg gunshot wound in the Hiawatha area Mercer County. Authorities report the wound not serious and say the shooting was apparently accidental by a young companion. State police and a conservation officer investigated last midnight. The youth was admitted about 8 p.m.

The search aims to discover unusual talent for recording. Cecil Surratt and King Edward Smith IV urge hillbilly singers and bands to attend, promising that big stars often begin with such tryouts.
The National Coal Association estimates bituminous production for the week ended August 29 at about 7.265 million tons, down from 8.25 million tons the same week last year. For the week ended August 22 output was 7.095 million tons, and for January 1 to August 29 the period totals about 262.261 million tons versus 255.113 million a year ago.

Lucian Moses told Bluefield police that at about 5 a.m. Thursday he was asleep in his car at Duffys Tavern on the Bluefield Princeton Road when two men woke him. One restrained him while the other took his wallet, about $15, and warned him to stay in the car. He reported no weapon was seen. one suspect is described as 20 to 30 years old, with no further details.
