Berlin reports the four military governors held their longest session amid talks on settling the eastern western crisis. A news blackout persisted and officials offered no progress clues. Moscow reports said envoys were optimistic, while German rail duties were being set to restore western zone traffic.
AFL truck drivers laid out a fresh contract agenda as a large walkout threatens 1.8 million workers in New York area. A joint employers and union meeting looms, with non striking Teamsters roaming city roads and delaying trucks from locals 816 and 282. Mayor O Dwyer warns of potential grocery store closures as partial deliveries continue to some independents.
President Truman appointed a three member commission to study labor relations tied to the atomic energy program. The panel is led by William H. Davis, former War Labor Board chair and former director of the Office of Economic Stabilization, with Edwin Witte of Wisconsin and Aaron Horwitz, noted arbitration expert in New York City, as the other members.
Loren O'Dell told city police he was away a week and found his bath tub, commode and other bathroom fixtures missing, along with a kitchen sink and all connections. He reported nothing else taken.
Prague reports Eduard Beneš died in Sezimovo Usti at 64 after a stroke and coma. He twice led Czechoslovakia through wars and upheaval, resigning last June amid Communist constitutional changes. Clement Gottwald ordered flags at half staff and conveyed condolences to Mrs Beneš.
Greek newspapers claim improved relations with Yugoslavia along the border. They cite Yugoslav soldiers dancing with Greek troops and a border post officer inviting a Greek commander for talks. Earlier reports note Greek guerrillas under pressure were turned back or interned by Yugoslavia as the Greek government laments cross border movement.
President Truman is considering an invitation to speak in Richmond during his campaign. The invitation came from five officers of the North Madison Young Democratic club. The club president elect Hern don P. Jeffreys Jr predicted that Truman will carry Virginia.
West Coast ports ground to a halt as a longshore strike paralyzed shipping from Canada to Mexico. About 12,000 CIO Longshoremen members picketed major ports with 16,000 seafarers idled, leaving 120 ships in port. leaders vowed a four to six month finish fight while owners accuse unions of communism and reject further negotiations under Taft Hartley.
In Wilmington California on September 3 a violent clash erupted at Consolidated Lumber Co dock as 150 CIO longshoremen fought AFL sailors over unloading a Rotondo lumber ship from Coos Bay. Both sides suffered injuries as hundreds clashed after the vessel arrived under AFL leadership.
Henry A Wallace campaigned through Tennessee and Arkansas officials consider a Wallace supporters petition to place an independents ticket on the November ballot for presidential electors. Arkansas secretary of state C G Hall said the request aims to sidestep a state law requiring party officials to deny communist affiliations. Wallace’s Arkansas visit passed without incident as he traveled by plane at 12:30 am and left for Memphis twelve hours later.
Charleston WV Sept 3 The death of William Blair Hartley 27 year old passenger at Beckley today marked the sixth traffic fatality this month The accident prevention bureau said the two a day death rate so far this month lifts the yearly toll to 255, 13 above last year at this date The bureau also reported 35 traffic deaths for August tying July and only March had more this year among the fatalities Cora Martin 19 year old passenger died on US Route 119 in Nicholas County yesterday
The Agriculture Department warned that meat supplies and per capita consumption will not improve this winter. Beefsteaks lamb chops and pork will be about 10 percent lower per capita than 1947, despite record corn and feed crops. Pork is expected to remain steadier, with winter supplies nearly as large as last year due to heavier hog weights and added slaughter from the big corn harvest.
Two Wise County convicts overpowered a guard near Pound and fled in a quarry truck around noon. Max Daniel howlett 22 of Frederick County jailed for non support and Edgar Stanley 25 of Dickenson County jailed for grand larceny and sought by Providence R I were the escapees.
In Astoria Oregon on September 3 an eight year old named Jerry Montgomery fell from a bridge into the Mec anticum river. Despite pleas to remove heavy shoes he refused saying they cost too much. The shoes and Jerry were swept away before help could reach him.
Astoria Oregon September 3 report shows 54 men registered for the draft in Clatsop county. Forty-nine are ineligible due to veteran or married status. The five remaining registrants were rejected by the wartime draft.
A Greyhound bus colliding with a coal truck on a narrow bridge north of Chillicothe, Ohio, killed six-year-old Elsie Rhodes and injured 11 others including her mother Louise Rhodes. Bus driver Paul Hickey and four others were hospitalized after the crash on Kinnikinnick Creek bridge. The bus was traveling from Columbus to Chillicothe.
Washington Sept 3 The House Un American Activities Committee announced new disclosures of a third red spy ring involving government employees will begin hearings in mid October, central to the president election campaign. The probe will also reopen investigations into communism in Hollywood, inroads among Negroes, and Reds entering the United States. The panel headed by Rep. J Parnell Thomas will resume Sept 15 on the Hiss Chambers case, then complete Elizabeth Bentley hearings before tackling the new spy network.
Knoxville Tenn Sept 3 Mrs Helen Hall of Los Angeles Calif says she located her two missing children here after a two and a half year nationwide search. Circuit Judge John M Kelly granted a writ of habeas corpus to bring the children into court Sept 13. John Gregory Hall 6 and Josephine Jane 5 are to be produced and shown why custody should not go to Mrs Hall.
Rhodes Sept 3 UN Mediator Folke Bernadotte returned to his mediation headquarters and began talks with his advisers Swedish General A Lundstrom and Dr Pablo Azcarate. He flew in from Stockholm after the Red Cross conference and will plan visits to Israel and Arab nations before reporting to the UN General Assembly in Paris.
Macomb Illinois September 3 a couple aged 68 and 64 plan to sell livestock and begin again after a niece started about 200 fires that destroyed their house and two barns leaving them with no feed or housing before winter. They will use insurance to clear debts and relocate temporarily while rebuilding next spring.
A U S B-29 from England based forces suffered engine trouble and ditched off the Dutch coast during a four day mock air battle near Britain. Crew were rescued. one was seriously injured. The incident occurred amid extensive daylight attack drills over Birmingham London Hull Coventry and other cities. The exercise aims to test defenses against fast high flying bombers and continues through Monday.
A topless woman was detained today at the U S Capitol after being spotted by Walter Linscott in the senate wing. Police took her to a hospital for observation. Name given as Dorothy P Smith of Malone New York.
In Warsaw Polish security police released Msgr Zygmunt Kaczynski after a 72 hour detention. He is the chief spokesman for Poland's Catholic hierarchy and a confidant of Cardinal Hlond. He was arrested at his Warsaw apartment on Tuesday accused of anti state activities and kept under surveillance during a security police inquiry.
Sixty Kerr-McGee oil workers were stranded on two drilling barges ten miles off the Louisiana coast as a Gulf hurricane approached. Rough seas snapped tow lines to tugs trying to pull the barges free. Tow ropes broke, and the center of the storm was to hit noon tomorrow. Dean McGee said the men would ride out the storm and that two days warning is unusual.
The gulf hurricane is moving toward the Louisiana coast between Morgan City and Grand Isle with winds near 75 mph in the center and gales spreading to 250 miles. Warnings cover from the mouth of the Mississippi to Vermilion bay, with shrimp boats and offshore oil ships seeking harbor as crews monitor the storm.
Norton Virginia authorities imposed emergency water restrictions as the mountain lake supplying the town runs low. The ordinance bans sprinkling lawns streets gardens and car washing with fines from 10 to 50 dollars for violations.
