Devastating Hood flood hits Hurley Virginia area
In Hurley Virginia heavy rains caused flash flooding along Guesses Fork Road. Volunteers provided aid as crews cleared a home crushed against a railroad trestle and authorities confirmed one fatality. Buchanan County official Trey Adkins said the flood was the worst since 2002.

Former McDowell deputy pleads guilty to battery
Martin Kevin Shelton, 47, of Avondale, a former McDowell County Sheriff's Office deputy, pleaded guilty to domestic battery in a July 6 incident in which he struck his wife. The case, investigated by the West Virginia State Police Welch detachment, was prosecuted by Mercer County Prosecuting Attorney Brian Cochran and heard by Mercer County Magistrate Mike Flanigan after McDowell County officials recused themselves.
