Moore Rules Out Race Against Byrd

Gov. Arch A Moore Jr will not seek the Senate seat against Sen. Robert Byrd citing Byrd prospects to become Senate majority leader. GOP chair George Sharp lamented the decision though Byrd thanked Moore for his support and vowed continued service to West Virginia.

August farm price drop lowers wholesale costs across economy

Labor Department figures show farm prices down 2.9 percent in August, the fifth monthly decline this year, led by hogs grains cotton and oil seeds, while finished consumer foods fall 2.2 percent at wholesale. Industrial commodities rise seven tenths of a percent for the second straight month.

Nester Sues N&W and Two Truckers Over Tazewell crash

Virgil Olsen Nester and his wife Learlene sue Norfolk & Western Railway, Dayton Transport Company, and Hahn Transportation Inc in U S District Court Bluefield over a July 9 Tazewell Va collision with a gasoline tanker and an N&W freight train. The suit seeks 5 million dollars, claiming negligent acts led to the wreck that killed two bystanders and a truck driver, burned Nester, and destroyed two local stores with over 2 million dollars in property damage. The tanker was operated by Dayton Transport and leased from Hahn Transportation. A jury trial is requested.

17 Workers Upheld In UTU Case In West Virginia

The West Virginia Human Rights Commission ordered United Transportation Union Local 655 to stop discriminatory seniority practices and pay back $65,823.15 to 17 Black Norfolk and Western Railway employees in Bluefield. The ruling found bypassed Black yard workers for road job promotions and noted union neglect to inform new Black members of rights and union documents.

Carnegie Council Finds Doctor Shortage Largely Urban

Canoe Tragedy Claims Princeton Man At Local Lake

A 28 year old Princeton man Daniel B Reese suffered drowning when a canoe overturned at Glenwood Recreational Park lake. He was unable to swim and his companions reached safety. Rescue teams recovered his body from about 12 feet of water.

Bluefield Virginia probe into 5613 tax office shortage continues

Bluefield town officials and police investigators pursue a missing tax revenue shortfall of 5613 for 1974. Town Manager Max E Bowen remains active in operations from a different office as the investigation extends with talks to potential witnesses. No charges have been filed as of Thursday.

Matoaka Trio Nabbed and Woman Charged in Jail Escape

Three Matoaka men Bill Hartwell Jenks Roberts and Roger Smith escaped from Matoaka Town Jail after prying bars loose and were later recaptured. Beatress Brooks 73 was jailed for selling tax paid whiskey to one escapee. Brooks posted bond and faces magistrate court.
