South Vietnam opens polling from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saigon time for president vice president and 60 seat Senate. About 80 percent of 5.85 million eligible voters expected to participate amid campaign controversy and threats, with early returns due about three hours after polls close.
In the run up to the national vote, conventional fighting slackened as U S forces reported light contacts on Saturday. B52s pounded targets in the DMZ while strikes against North Vietnam were limited by bad weather. The U S command listed air losses of 2 632 aircraft with 670 shot down by North Vietnam, 202 by the communists in the South, and 368 helicopters. Guerrilla raids killed four South Vietnamese and burned 14 homes in Tam Ky as the Viet Cong sought to disrupt the election. Civilians casualties were tallied at 190 dead, 436 wounded and 237 kidnapped in the past six days.

In Houston a station attendant Phillip Allen, 26, is charged with murder rape burglary and two counts of assault with intent to murder after a knife attack on a Jones home. A 6 year old girl child died and Mrs Jones and her husband were critically wounded. A neighbor restrained the intruder as the 10 year old boy escaped unharmed.
Aichach Germany AP Ilse Koch known as the Bitch of Buchenwald killed herself in her prison cell. She was 60. Witnesses testified to brutal camp cruelty including tattooing killed prisoners and using dogs on inmates. Koch had spent two decades in custody after wartime trials and appeals.
