U S Army investigators report an 8 inch artillery shell fired with seven unit powder charges overshot its target and exploded among troops in Grafenwoehr Germany. Fifteen soldiers died and twenty seven were wounded in the training mishap near North Bavaria.
In the Congo turmoil, U.N. African forces fire to restore order as fighting between Congolese troops and secessionists in Bakwanga intensifies. At Moerbeke near Thysville at least 270 dead. Lumumba regime moves toward strong measures amid influx of Soviet advisers.
Western summit leaders reportedly plan to boycott Khrushchev's appearance at the United Nations General Assembly while Eisenhower may still travel to New York to deliver a joint Allied reply. Western officials note Khrushchev may stay only a few days and consider two motives for attending.
Eugene Stanford Justus 14 of Hurley Va was found fatally shot Friday at 11 am near a skating rink setup in Hurley. He died at Grundy Hospital after being shot in the right eye by a .32 caliber revolver. Sheriff Burl Riffe said evidence supports an accidental shooting and the investigation continues. He is survived by his parents and a brother. Funeral services set for Sunday at 2 pm at Hurley Presbyterian Church with burial in Belcher Cemetery. Grundy Funeral Home in charge.
NASA reports Echo I satellite may be visible over West Virginia on Saturday at 4 03 p m 6 11 p m 8 16 p m and 10 22 p m EST and on Sunday at 12 31 a m 7 53 p m and 9 59 p m. The satellite generally crosses the sky in a southeasterly direction.
Rep. Cecil R. King accused a campaign payoff linked to the seizure of Long Beach Savings & Loan, saying a local law firm led by Nixon campaign manager clocked in a lucrative retainer with the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. King cited White House involvement and a Moss subcommittee probe into the April seizure amid denials from John Clock and other aides.

The new roster adds June Allyson Dick Powell Ray Bolger Walter Brennan Gary Cooper Walt Disney Jerry Lewis Ethel Merman Efrem Zimbalist Jr and producer Jean Dalrymple named Eastern Vice Chairman. Powell and Jack Bolton were named West Coast Vice Chairmen.
Marion county authorities charged 33 year old Joseph Harry Milani with abducting and killing 17 year old Mary Lily Ebien Roberts near Crab Orchard Lake on August 25. FBI traced shell and price tag evidence to a Herrin area suspect, Milani was captured at his home near Herrin. John Bryant Jr. survived the shooting.
The State Department labeled a forged anti US document about Fidel Castro a phony using the big lie tactic. Officials said the three page airgram imitates authentic dispatches and falsely accuses Washington of plotting against Cuba. The department warned the forgery may be spread to Latin America.
Robert Berger a 51 year old Pocahontas resident was stabbed at his Rolfe Street home at 6 30 pm He was taken to Bluefield Sanitarium in fair condition His wife Mamie Berger 49 was held on a felonious wounding charge as authorities investigated the argument between them Pocahontas Police Chief Roy Sykes and Patrolman James Harold investigated the stabbing
