Local notices list coal prices and service offers from City Coal Co and Twin City Coal Co, plus repairs, a film at Atkins Studio, and a piano of community events. A fine pointer owned by Dr. A. H. Hoge and W. C. Snyder died after consuming strychnine in a piece of food. The dog was found in the cellar of Dr. Hoge’s Union street home while preparations were underway to enter it in a dog show at the fair.
A defective gas pipe on North Street triggered a fire alarm at box 44 about 9 PM with no damage. It was the week’s third alarm. Earlier a blaze near a furnace in the Bland Street Bluefield Telephone building was extinguished. Monday a Fulton Street home sustained about $200 damage from a short circuit.
The program lists a half mile race with purse £150 and horse races at 1:30 p.m. A 2:14 trot purse $300 and a 215 pace purse $300 follow. 1-2 mile dash and 8-4 mile dash offer $150 purses. Seven circus acts perform along with a Higgins Band concert. Fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.
Rain yesterday led Bluefield Fair to postpone day two events and issue rain checks. A double fireworks program was arranged for tonight with Woodrow Wilson as a feature. the midway was soaked, free acts canceled, and a large tent housing the automobile exhibit collapsed during the storm.

City board approves cooperation for National Defense Day observe from 12 noon to 2 pm. Mayor Wm. H. Thomas authorized to draft proclamation urging citizens to observe the occasion.

James S. Kahle, a prominent local attorney, was injured Tuesday afternoon when his car skidded on Princeton Road near Glenwood Park and overturned. His small finger was amputated after injury to his hand. he returned to Bluefield by streetcar and received care at the Bluefield Sanitarium.
The Princeton Power Company started two new street cars on the Bluefield line the first of six ordered for the Bluefield division. Two more cars were shipped last Wednesday. all six expected soon. Built in Cincinnati the cars are state of the art capable of pulling a trailer and differ from existing units in color and designation.
Jim Tolbert, a carpenter, gayly beaten by Jim Boyd in the west end. Tolbert hospitalized with severe head injuries while Boyd, jailed, admits intent but used only his fists after threatening Tolbert over alleged advances on Boyd's wife.
Milwaukee Sept 2 Governor Blaine seeking re election on the Republican ticket led a three cornered race with 53 476 votes after 772 precincts reported He had the endorsement of Senator La Follette Arthur R Hirst former state high engineer was second with 39 987 and Geo F Comings lieutenant ee trailed with 23 093.
Columbus Ohio September 2 Ohio and West Virginia reached a reciprocal agreement allowing motor trucks crossing the state line for transit business to avoid certificates of convenience and necessity in Ohio and West Virginia licenses. The pact, announced after talks between C E Heiner West Virginia highway commissioner and the Ohio public utilities commission, follows recent arrests caused by absence of such an accord.
Respondents to Senator Lafollette's Labor Day radio address, mostly sending congratulations, began arriving at campaign headquarters. Lafollette invited listeners to write, promising personal replies, as his managers seek to gauge radio appeal effectiveness.

Walter F. Douthat aged fifty seven and one of Bluefield’s oldest residents died in his sleep at 400 Rogers Street where he had lived with Mrs. C. M. Mefford. Born May 21 1867 in Dublin Virginia he came to Bluefield thirty four years ago and worked with his brother Ed in paint and paper before joining C B Whitlow Paint and Paper Co as a house decorator. He is survived by sister Mrs J A B Bruce of Bluefield and brothers Alvin in Portsmouth Ohio Marvin and Ed in Bluefield. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 30 pm at T L Smithdeal’s Bluefield Avenue home with interment at Walnut Grove cemetery. He belonged to Bland Street Methodist Church.
Prohibition officers, after guarding a mountain site for over a day, destroyed a large still near Sand Lick and arrested six adults and a fourteen-year-old. Officers found thirty gallons of liquor buried along two paths, a 30 gallon copper still, six 60 gallon mash barrels, a cook stove, tarpaulin marked Mercer county, and assorted equipment. Suspects F O Snyder Sam De Long Alphonso Riggin Sam Edwards and Sam Ottavini detained. hearings set before Commissioner Thomas H Scott.
Manchester reports a tight Republican race as unofficial returns from 165 of 294 precincts show J. Winant leading F. Knox for governor. Senator Henry W. Keyes is renominated Republican. Democrats nominate no one for governor, senator, or Congress. Governor Fred H. Brown seeks a rare second term. State Treasurer George E. Farrand targets Keyes in November.
F C Lamb former Charleston National Bank official and state banking department employee has accepted management of the American Finance Company in Bluefield. He leads the new institution from temporary offices in the Bradmann Building and is hailed as an asset to Bluefield’s progressive citizenship.
Jack Holt and Norma Shearer star in Empty Hands based on Arthur Stringer. The film portrays a man and woman surviving in the wilderness with only clothes and a knife. Filmed on location in Yosemite, Holt mimics harsh survival lessons once learned in Alaska.
Rotary's weekly gathering yesterday featured a talk by Dr. R. A. La Jt sell on back-to-school themes. Local teachers attended as guests as the club notes its years of backing the movement and its work encouraging boys to complete high school and continue to college.
Arrangements for Defense Day in Bluefield were finalized with a city proclamation calling on citizens to display flags from 12 to 2 p.m. on September 12. The American Legion says it is not sponsoring the tests, which are a patriotic observance under national and state calls, with reserve officers in charge.
